We are all stardust.

That oxygen you breath? That comes from dying massive stars, ending their light in a supernova.

The iron in your blood? Some massive stars dying, but mainly white dwarfs, the leftovers of dwarf stars like our own Sun, exploding.

The gold ring on your finger? Mostly merging neutron stars, leftovers from supernovae.

Someone said to me recently (when I was trying to "It's ok" away my tears): "It's not ok. But you'll be ok." I found that really comforting, so just putting it out there in the world.
It was a non-traditional Thanksgiving, far from America, with mostly not-American friends and family. And it was a joy, eating together, being with each other and being grateful. Even if I did have to explain to my mother several times that Thanksgiving had nothing to do with the War of Independence so even English people were allowed to eat a lot and be grateful for each other and their lives.
Did some searching and finally learned out how to turn off notification sounds in #Mastodon -- it's not under Preferences, as I thought. Open #Notifications, then the three bar control icon at the top, and then you'll see additional notification preferences, including sound settings. Thank you the person who left this solution "for future googlers!" https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/14557#issuecomment-1108590191

Many commentators are tweeting & tooting that we need to expand the SCOTUS. That is not the answer to everything. Unless you just want a larger Court, not bound by ethics rules, engaging in the kind of behavior described in the NYT piece. What we need are guardrails - an understanding that the Court sits w/i our democracy. Our job us to strengthen it by creating the processes that promote impartiality & insulation from lobbying, not crossing our fingers & hoping for the best.

Twitter emboldened people with outrageously bad takes or racist & bigoted views to share them for the rush of a viral tweet. It silenced already marginalized voices through threats & intimidation.

Twitter rewarded narcissism with follows & gave tremendous power to people least deserving of leadership roles or equipped for public service.

It was never the “town square” but often the mob with pitchforks & torches. If #Twitter falls, democracy & humanity will be better off. #TwitterMigration

"What I’m finding most satisfying about Mastodon, and I’m seeing a lot of other journalists feel this, is that it actually forces you to ask and confront some of these questions and to make active choices. Even if Mastodon were to remain Twitter’s very tiny stepbrother, I would still like to be part of a Mastodon journalist community because I think we got lazy as a field, and we let Mark Zuckerberg, Jack Dorsey, and, god help us, Elon Musk decide..."

Mastodon’s Moment – The Markup

A conversation with Adam Davidson

@MarilynPF I've deliberately *not* imported my Twitter people en masse, for exactly that kind of reason—I want to see the place I've arrived in and what life is like here, which I won't if all I see is people I already know.
