Applications for the next Collab Lab cohort open up in under 1 month! 🥳

The cohort will run from February 1 through March 31.

In case you don’t know us, Collab Lab is the best way for early-career developers to learn the skills professional software teams use in their daily work. And, it's FREE to participate!

The time expectation for developers is 6 hours per week. During those 6 hours, you:

- Pair program
- Create PRs
- Do code reviews
- Merge your branch
- Demo your work

All of the preceding is stuff that’s hard to simulate when learning solo. Even most bootcamps don’t do a great job of it. 😬

This time around, we will be operating in North America and Europe/Africa time zones! 🌎🌍

When Stacie & Andrew floated these changes at our last Board meeting, the response was enthusiastic! Turns out we all want to do a better job and creating space between the cohorts is the best way to do it. We’re confident this will make it so we can serve more people more effectively over time. ❤️

So, the 1st change we’re implementing is that we’ll be moving from running 4 cohorts per year to running just 2.

Note: The next cohort will be pushed out to August 6. We’ll kick off the following cohort in February of 2024.

“Wait,” you say, “doesn’t that mean fewer people get to participate?”

Yes, at least at first. We love you all and want you to get established in tech! We do plan to run more teams per cohort and eventually expect to be able to serve significantly more of you under this new model! 💪

The 2nd change is that starting in 2024, we will roll out an updated, more integrated curriculum that incorporates both the project work we all value with the best parts of our beloved Career Lab program. It’s likely we’ll change from being an 8-week program with an optional 2 weeks tacked on to offering a single, 10-week experience. We’re excited about this!

Collab Lab started almost 4 years ago with @segdeha running a single team with 4 developers and grew from there.

We quickly settled on a cadence of running a new cohort of 4-6 teams per quarter. That worked pretty well for most of the last 3 years. But the time has come to change things up!

Under our current structure, we’ve found it tough to catch our collective breath. Our volunteers get burnt out and we struggle to find the time and energy to improve the program.

Turns out running a nonprofit that changes lives on top of one’s day job is tiring, y’all. Who knew?

Our Q2 2023 cohort has been selected and is getting started on their Collab Lab experience! 🥳

We had a record number of applicants this time, so we were able to add a 4th North America team at the last minute to make it so more people could participate for a total of 7 teams! 😲

Still, only 1 in 10 applicants got in. We wish we could accept everyone! 😭

We hope those who weren’t selected this time around will try again in June for our Q3 cohort! 💪

Between now and then we couldn’t be more excited to work alongside our new Collabies! ❤️

Today is the last day to apply for the Q2 2023 cohort of The Collab Lab!

Collab Lab is:

- Collaborative project practice for early-career developers

- An inclusive community for people underrepresented in tech

- Designed not to teach coding, but to teach how professional software teams work together

- Volunteer-run and free for participants.

We’re running teams from UTC-10 through UTC+6 this cohort. From our estimates (with the help of #ChatGPT), that includes people in 74 countries representing between 2.5 and 2.7 billion people! 😲

Applications will close around 9pm Pacific Time today, so don’t delay!

We kick off new cohorts at the start of each calendar quarter, so if the timing doesn’t work out this time, check back with us in mid-June!

Will be sitting in today on final demos for the Q1 2023 cohort of @CollabLab. This has been such a great group! They’ve really thrown themselves into the experience and I can’t want to see their final products!
