My friend on a sick day. This cold is viscous and it helps to have a solid purry lapwarmer.
#cats
I pause to look at this wasp nest and this apple every time I walk past them.
They never look real ....
Skyline Sheep is one of my favourite #Defaidodon sub-genres. They look like they’re on sentry duty.

My favourite sheep pic of the year - from our trip to Mull in April.

Guess where our dog was.

Went to Bodie California today. A real life ghost town on this Old Hallow's Eve.

The town boomed in the 1880's with gold and silver, only to fall in hard times as the mines went bust. A fire took out most of the town in 1932. Everyone packed up and left, not even bothering to move furniture.

The town was preserved in arrested decay in the 1960's.

More shots from Bodie.
@sewblue Nifty. Came close but never actually went there. If you're still in the area, the Chemung Mine site at Masonic is also decently preserved (mostly for being robustly built and abandoned much more recently) and nifty to poke around. There are still cyanide drums lying around, or were ten years ago.
@sewblue Unsurprisingly, @AbandonedAmerica visited Bodie, too - check out his set: https://www.abandonedamerica.us/bodie 😊
Bodie, CA: America's Greatest Ghost Town | Abandoned America

Bodie, California isn't just one of the largest ghost towns in America - it's also one of the best preserved.

@jwcph @AbandonedAmerica of course he's been! Thank you! 😄
@sewblue I can't get over the general store — I love all the old containers and labels (and the mostly unchanged Ghirardelli branding)

@sewblue

Amazing. Can't imagine how it has been left undisturbed.

So many disturbance vectors.

@skua It is a state park and really remote. Everything well secured and rangers live there year round.

It had a small population up to WWII. A few hundred vs the orginal thousands. Mining stopped due to the war and the last people left. The family that owned the mine bought most of the town and initially had caretakers. Gave it to the state in the 1960's once it was clear there would be no more mining.

@sewblue @az I've been there and I really enjoyed walking around, but what I really wish was that it was accessible at night during a full moon. I think it would really give some excellent photo opportunities.

Unfortunately, there are so many people out there who take pleasure in breaking up remnants of history that the place needs to be protected, possibly beyond what's necessary. I'm not really complaining as much as voicing disappointment.

@mlanger @sewblue @az I'm guessing such a photoshoot could be officially arranged with the rangers. But of course you'd have to go back.
@sewblue Bodie is the first place where I ever saw a “state of arrested decay” sign. That was 40 years ago and it still looks the same, so I guess the sign is right.

@MartyFouts They have been replacing roofs and making sure things stay secure. Keeping critters out. But not much more.

I saw some pictures from the 1970's when places still had paint. You can see remnants on some buildings, in protected spots.

@sewblue
Someone needs to take a Swiffer duster to that place
@sewblue Here is a shot from my visit to Bodie 20 years ago. We had a great time in the US. We drove there via Tioga Pass and I can remember reading how difficult it is to drive. But compared to alpine passes, it wasn't.

@Der_Michi Tioga Pass was built in the 1960's. Even by California standards, it is modern. Yosemite Park attracts people from all over the world, including those who have never driven on a mountain let alone a pass so the park tends to be heavy handed in how they communicate. You should see how they handle snow!

That said, I've gone over multiple Sierra passes and Tioga isn't the worst. The back side of the Sierras have a 25% grade, vs the front side's 2%. Crazy lopsided.

@sewblue
I visited Bodie back in the mid nineties. So glad it is still being preserved. The remote desert environment helps, but it still can't be easy.
@sewblue looks like one of the old west film sets my dad worked on... Wonder if there's ghosts
@lacybarry my kid is ghost crazy so that is why we went!
@sewblue awesome! Lucky kid 👻
