Bellwether. That's how it's spelled. Not bellweather or belle-weather. Why?

It's a metaphor. A "wether" is a neutered male sheep. Sheep follow a leader. Shepherds would put a bell on a wether, a leader, and the flock of ewes and lambs would follow him. So when the shepherds would hear the wether's bell, they'd know the flock was nearby. (Real shepherds, please chime in!)

Hence the metaphor -- a bellwether is an early sign of something.
