@CoMaps
I like the idea of the Android app but in order for it to work you GPS has to be turned on and if its turned on then Google has access to your location. Kind of defeats the privacy part.

@UnicornLady @CoMaps Yeah but a navigation app without access to GPS is kind of worthless?

Google location access is quite annoying and only way would be to use vanilla rom (without Gapps) but it has its own issues.

@dark_phoenix @UnicornLady @CoMaps You can disable Google and only use GPS on any phone, but is a bit slower.

@rejzor @UnicornLady @CoMaps Oh yeah, CoMaps has a feature which uses Google Locations services for higher accuracy. But I am glad it can work without it, although a bit slower and less accurate.

Btw, how to disable Google? Does disabling Gmaps stop all location services tracking? or the Google Search App? or is it embedded in the GMS components?

@dark_phoenix it's embedded in GMS, by default your location, nearby wifi, bluetooth, etc. are constantly sent to Google in the background.

The only thing you can do really is use a de-googled ROM like CalyxOS, LineageOS or Graphene

@hbond @dark_phoenix or atleast disable all google apps. If possible google play services
@hbond Using a de-googled rom would make me lose some apps (like govt apps, UPI and some banking ones)

@dark_phoenix @UnicornLady @CoMaps You have to disable it in Android settings (Settings->Location->Location services->Location accuracy

Disable "Improve Location Accuracy". This will disable Google's location service entirely and phone will rely on GPS only to determine your location. You can also disable Location entirely to not even use GPS until actually needed. And to save some battery. Apart from navigation/maps, you really don't need location at all.

@UnicornLady you can decline that and use it with offline Maps like you would use any "normal" analig map.
Also as mentioned here Google knowing your location is an issue of your device not of CoMaps. Use Graphene, or a deGoogled ROM for that ;)
@CoMaps
@UnicornLady GPS still works if you switch on airplane mode.
@CoMaps That‘s great news, but you didn‘t answer my last question:
When do you release the iOS version?
@patschifig @CoMaps A little too passive aggressive perhaps?
@patschifig @CoMaps It's coming! we finally have someone who can work on it, and they've been making rapid progress :)
@hbond @CoMaps That‘s great to hear! Thank you!
@CoMaps got it on my phone and starting to contribute local data! Will there be Android Auto support soon? 🤞
@cockroachinapartyhat
AFAIK, the app should already have AA support, since the original one also had it.
@CoMaps
@nanianmichaels @CoMaps it didn't work for me when I tried it, but I just looked it up and apparently you have to download it from the Google Play store for android auto to work. I got it from F-Droid, so that might explain it. I'll download the Play store version and try again
@cockroachinapartyhat @CoMaps You might need to enable dev mode in Android Auto and manually add the app to the launcher, if you're using the non-GP version.

@CoMaps
Glad to know you also have the APK available on the Codeberg repo.

F-Droid is awesome, but it can be slow to update after a new release gets posted on the app's repo.

BTW, have you looked into Obtainium as another way of distributing the APK?

@nanianmichaels @CoMaps
You can get the app on Obtanium as is. You just have to point Obtainium at the releases page on Comaps Codeberg repo. :)

@Papaexmatrikulatus

Oh, yes, I know that. I've already added it. And installed it, too!

Though I now realized I confused Obtainium with another app... Obtainium doesn't add apps directly, only the other one does... Disregard my brain hiccup 😛

@CoMaps is it normal when i install the fdroid version that it didn't overwrite the apk install?
Now i have two comaps
@CoMaps (als thank you for adding alt text to the post just now. I generally don't boost stuff that doesn't have alt text on it. So I hope that it can be included for any future posts at the time of posting)
@thibaultmol @CoMaps looks like they have 2 different app ids, app.comaps.fdroid and app.comaps.google. Most things don't do an app id per distribution method. But it's probably alright, you usually can't mix updates between F-Droid and Google Play anyway because of different signing keys.
@thibaultmol @CoMaps yep, sorting out the flow for that is a work in progress, but it's something that's on the radar (and important to me) 🙂
@thibaultmol @CoMaps f-droid failed to make a reproducible build, so it was not signed with a comaps key, and comaps is giving every app signature it's own build.
@thibaultmol @CoMaps I got a duplicate as well, and had to download the maps and log in at OSM again. But not a big problem as it probably only happens once.
It would be nice, however, to have an app icon that shows this is a map application.
What are the main differences compared to Organic Maps so far?
@kallekn @thibaultmol @CoMaps there's a community voting and design going on to get a nice logo! https://codeberg.org/comaps/Governance/issues/78

C'est normal, la version F-Droid n'a pas la mêle signature.

@CoMaps

@CoMaps hmm did not find. will try again later.
@legion @CoMaps
In F-Droid: Settings -> Unwanted -> Enable Tethering Network Services
@legion @CoMaps it seem that the APK is avialable on F-Droid site, but not the link to install from F-Droid app.
@cmyrland @3rik @legion @CoMaps you'll have to enable the "tethered network services" so-called "anti-feature" in F-Droid settings to find the CoMaps app.

@rwdf Hm, I tried that. But I'll try again.

Edit: Now it worked.

@cmyrland @legion @CoMaps

@3rik
Ah, it appeared instantly here.
@rwdf @legion @CoMaps
@rwdf @cmyrland @3rik @CoMaps that opt is the next thing i struggle to find
@legion
It's under settings, app compatibility, "Include Anti-Features", then you get a checklist.
@cmyrland @3rik @CoMaps
@rwdf @cmyrland @3rik @CoMaps ahh thx a lot. now i found it. german translation of the app didnt help. thx.
@CoMaps I cross my fingers for a release on Accrescent :)
@CoMaps I cannot find the app on F-Droid
