As the pandemic’s
1st year
became its 2nd
I told myself
it wouldn’t last
into a 3rd year

As its 2nd
became its 3rd
and then as its 3rd
became its 4th
I told myself this one
this one will be its last

And now
as its 4th
becomes its 5th
I just hope
that this year
won’t be my last

The nervous tension
is gone
from my anxious friend’s voice
no longer does he talk
of professional concerns
of relationship fears
of financial woes
he says he has a new perspective
his new perspective is:
“everything’s fucked
so I’m right to be anxious”
and I fear he has a point.

They say it’s impossible
to unscramble an egg
or to put the toothpaste
back in the tube
but pestilence and war
are not eggs or toothpaste
just horsemen
and it is quite possible
to put the horses
back in the stable.

November 2023 - Letter to HICPAC Members - WHN

We want healthcare to be safe for both healthcare workers and patients. The Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee (HICPAC) is the body that advises the CDC on infection control in healthcare. You can tell
that you are living
in the dark times
if when they ask you
if you have heard
the terrible news
you have to respond
by asking them
which terrible news
they mean.
You must not believe
that our leaders
have learned nothing
from the pandemic
for it is quite clear
they have learned
that the best way to distract
from countless deaths
is to dispute the count
or to stop counting entirely.
