Old retired IT guy. Used to do computer/software programming/development; then system & net admin/engineering/integration/support. Infosec was always part of the job, and frankly the only part I still care about. Retired from doing other IT work after realizing that nearly everything I learned over the years was becoming obsolete faster than I could learn new stuff.

GDPR Enforcement Is Broken - And Nobody Cares

20 GDPR deletion requests, 12 ignored. Companies lie about compliance, spam filters eat requests with no consequences, and data protection offices don't act. A first-hand account of how GDPR enforcement fails individuals.

The latest "Tetra crypto is broken" is a reminder that, apparently, secure cryptography is counterintuitive to many, and this goes up to gov officials, police, military, etc. - the prevalent and completely wrong idea that "we need something extra special for extremely high security". While the exact opposite is true. The best you can do is to use the most standard crypto available. Because that's the one that will have seen most scrunity.

Humans independently edit Wikipedia for humans. They don’t have any Ads or cannot be bullied into removing content. Wikipedia is free from AI slop. No wonder tech bros with AI companies want to eliminate it so that their fake AI text generator can show or push propaganda. Please do not let Wikipedia die. It is an independent source and far more reliable than Gen AI companies. It is a real shame that it comes to this.

"The two-page memo, which was obtained by The Associated Press, does not allege any criminal conduct by Khalil, a legal permanent U.S. resident and graduate student... Rather, Rubio wrote Khalil could be expelled for his beliefs."

Pressed for evidence against Mahmoud Khalil, government cites its power to deport people for beliefs

The U.S. government has submitted a two-page memo from Secretary of State Marco Rubio as its main evidence in its deportation case against Columbia University activist Mahmoud Khalil. The memo obtained by The Associated Press does not allege criminal conduct by Khalil but cites a legal provision that gives the government authority to deport people whose presence in the U.S. compromises a U.S. foreign policy interest. The submission was filed Wednesday in Louisiana immigration court after a judge there ordered the government to produce its evidence against Khalil. The judge said she plans to decide Friday whether it has enough evidence to continue detaining Khalil.

This is your reminder...

There is no algorithm that brings posts to your timeline. The only posts you will see under your Home tab will be either people that you follow, or the boosts from people that you follow.

BOOSTING IS THE LIFE BLOOD OF MASTODON.

If you read something that is interesting, funny, thought provoking, news worthy, or beautiful, then BOOST IT.

Hitting "Favorite" lets the poster know that you liked it BUT IT DOESN'T LET ANYONE ELSE KNOW.

Keep Mastodon alive. BOOST.

One of several essentially identical recent voicemail messages from different phone numbers and area codes (all from “Michael”). Haven’t heard this one before; I could even be among the first 100,000 or so recipients!-)

Looks like scammers trying to exploit a (recent?) data breach of compromised Walmart accounts. Apparently have an associated name and a phone number. Probably info on one or more ordered products.

If they have any associated password or payment info, I’ll bet it’s encrypted, and these messages are attempts to phish for it.
