Finished.
Verdict: I liked it.
Some of the puzzling is getting really clever, asking you to use your abilities in ways you wouldn’t expect. It gives you a buzz when you crack it, almost like you’ve broken the game with your own cleverness - and I can see why that in particular is playing well with the critics.
It’s also added some precision platforming though and, if there’s one way to make me lose interest in your game quickly, it’s with precision platforming.
Still, there’s something about it that keeps me playing….
@CherryLambrini damn right. The Master System was an objectively better console than the NES on technical level and that’s a hill I’m willing to die on.
I’ve played Animal Well for a couple of hours now… it’s a very good, very inventive, great looking indie Metroidvania.
…but it’s still just an indie Metroidvania, and not hugely different to the dozens of other games in the same style we’ve been seeing for a decade now.
Maybe there’s more to come and I’ll end up eating my words, but so far I’m a little bit surprised by the wall to wall 10/10s it got.
@CherryLambrini I had the same experience with Crash Team Racing.
Never played it back in the day and I thought I’d like it because it has a Diddy Kong Racing style adventure mode, but I bounced off it - probably didn’t help all of the characters are absolutely horrific and don’t have an ounce of the charm of anything in DKR 😂
I feel like not buying that Garfield karting game while it’s on sale for £1 will be a big mistake, even if it is a steaming pile of shite…
@CherryLambrini haha yeah, completely ruined. They were so important back then. The mags were your only way to see anything about upcoming games - I remember looking at one particular Ocarina of Time screenshot over and over again, trying to imagine what the game was like, how it moved, etc 😂
