I love the workboats of the Chesapeake Bay. Each one has a name and a story. You become familiar with the boat names and connect the dots to the waterman when you eventually meet them.
The
#Chesapeake Bay deadrise is the traditional boat used for crabbing and oystering on the bay and has been around since the late 1800s. They are sturdy, and maybe that’s what I like about them.
Traditionally wooden hulled, they have a sharp
#bow that becomes a flat V shape moving along the bottom of the
#boat. Sometimes a small cabin and a large open cockpit for the work area. They have a shallow draft of two to three feet, making it perfect for the bay. The average deadrise workboat is 35 to 45 feet long. They usually have diesel engines. I love hearing the sound in the distance in the early morning.
