Just witnessed a super racist incident at Fino in Portland. Surprise party went south for a bunch of non-white folks who gifted the guest of honor a bottle of something, and the manager accused them of being underage and passing the bottle around.

1) they were all 21+, but non-white and having a good time

2) host of the party tried to talk to the manager but she threw to-go boxes and their bill at them, demanding they leave. Host of the party tried to figure it out, but manager wouldn’t have it.

3) they apologized to us. Both the staff and the party. The party was so confused. They boxed up their stuff, laughing in disbelief. The host kept holding up the gifted bottle in question. “This bottle? This bottle right here?! Open it. Open it right now and tell me the seal has been broken. Tell me we’ve been drinking from it.”
(They hadn’t.)
Manager opened the bottle and said, “see?! It’s been opened!”

4) we were the last folks in the spot, clearly uncomfortable. We asked for boxes and packed up our game of scrabble. Our check came with an apologetic note. I left a 20% tip and a note basically saying that it wasn’t the other guests that made us leave.

Manager kept yelling that she wasn’t going to have her OLCC license revoked because of them.

I’ve been in this industry for over 20 years. This was awful.

I’m finally out of jail and safe. Each and every one of the charges I got are complete & utter bullshit. They intentionally targeted me & charged me with crimes they know I did not commit. PPB has a pattern of targeting journalists and this is no different.

Instead of simply saying "Join a Union" and nothing more, I want people to realise a few things about unions. Even the ones we see as "good," like the IWW.

They are not perfect, and they need to be held to higher standards of accountability and responsibility. Just telling people to "join a union" does nothing to solve the issues that a lot of people face *after* they join.

Much of this is going to be from my own personal experiences and background, so feel free to add/comment.
