I'm pleased to be able to share a draft translation containing the Introduction ("On Happiness"), Books I-V and the Epilogue from Pierre Leroux's "Humanity" (1840). This was an influential work in the 19th century and excerpts appeared in English in “The Present” and “The Spirit of the Age” alongside the anarchistic works of the era.

You will find a new translation of Hector Morel's "Dialogues Between an Anarchist and an Authoritarian" (1888) linked in the sidebar of this post, which contains my translation of his 1862 work "Nationalities."

The Dialogues are an interesting example of anarchist communist thought in the movement's early, more or less "anti-organizationalist" period. But they are also just a fun, rather uncompromising defense of anarchist ideas.

Hector Morel, “Nationalities Considered from the Point of View of Liberty” (1862) - The Libertarian Labyrinth

If there are words that we have used and abused, which we use and abuse every day, they are unquestionably the words nation and homeland. Everything in society which aims to muzzle and exploit the people, to paralyze and hold back the development of human intelligence, is always and invariably advanced in the name of the homeland: Laws and regulations, ordinances and decrees, scaffolds and prisons, police and gendarmes, etc., etc., all this hideous paraphernalia of chains and slavery, of plunder and misery, of exploitation and servitude, has only been invented, only exists, in the interest of the good order and internal security of nations. This new translation is likely not an authentic Ravachol letter, but it is certainly more interesting than most of the apparent fakes. https://www.libertarian-labyrinth.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Ravachol-We_could_agree.pdf #workingtranslations #anarchisthistory #ravachol

Benjamin Colin (1818-1884) - The Libertarian Labyrinth

There are a handful of very early anarchist or at least anarchistic writings identified by Max Nettlau that have remained elusive in my searches. One in particular — "Plus de gouvernement!" by Benjamin Colin — has nagged at me a bit, since I have known that the paper it was published in, L'Homme, journal de la démocratie universelle, was accessible in various forms and included some other anarchism-related content. But I have never got around the making the extra effort or financial outlay necessary to get my hands on it. [...]

Text and Notes: Justice in the Revolution and in the Church: Preliminary Address (concluded) - The Libertarian Labyrinth

This selection concludes the "Preliminary Address." I have repeated the few paragraphs from the third section that I included at the end of the first installment.  [...]

Proudhon, “The Celebration of Sunday” (revised and expanded translation) - The Libertarian Labyrinth

I'm a few days behind schedule getting the first notes on Justice together. Among other things, I've been trying to make the most of a narrow fall window to get our yard a little bit better adapted to changing conditions. But work is progressing. I should have test prints of the "text" editions of the first two volumes within a week, at which point I'll make ordering copies an option for others, and I've been trying to shoehorn in the time to put together a companion volume collecting some pre-1858 texts that provide useful context. [...]

Justice in the Revolution and in the Church, Volume Two: Translator’s Notes - The Libertarian Labyrinth

I have now uploaded the second volume of my working translation of Proudhon’s Of Justice in the Revolution and in the Church, which includes the Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Studies, the second part of the essay "Bourgeoisie and Plebs" and two passages from the 1858 edition not included in the revised edition. These are revised drafts, with most of the problem passages resolved, but, as with the first volume, some notes will probably help to orient readers.

A Rough “Justice” and More - The Libertarian Labyrinth

Last night I was able to complete a rough first-draft translation of Proudhon's six-volume masterpiece, Justice in the Revolution and in the Church. When I started the project at the beginning of the year, I wasn't at all certain that I could finish it in a year's time. But here it is, mid-July, and my translation drafts for the year amount to more than 1,050,000 words, roughly 3250 double-spaced pages of material. [...]
