The Andressen manifesto is the gift that keeps giving because it inspires writing like this.

"The techno-optimist tribe gives off the distinct impression of people who have been so ridiculously rich for so long that they’ve just completely lost the plot about how the real world works. To be fair, this is an apt description of most of Silicon Valley."

Marc Andreessen Is Wrong About Everything

The billionaire says he wants to lead a "techno-optimist" revolution. But he's too rich to understand that his belief system is stupid.

Songtradr fired half the staff at bandcamp, and that signals a dark future for bandcamp as a company.

So we're going to do something about it:

The Uncertain Future of Bandcamp

If you’ve followed me for any length of time, you probably already know that I run a record label. If you haven’t, now you know I run a record label. It’s called Analog Revolution, and we do the bulk of our sales through our website (and our cassette subcription platform), but we have also been, for the last ten years, big fans of and users of Bandcamp. It was recently announced that Bandcamp was being sold (again) and this time, they’re laying off half the staff. This is almost certainly in response to Bandcamp’s efforts to unionize (see the bandcamp union’s response to the layoffs on instagram) and it leaves folks like me in a curious position. So, let’s talk about the future of music distribution in a world where the future of bandcamp is uncertain.

Today, Epic Games’ sale of Bandcamp to Songtradr closed and at least half of Bandcamp’s staff was laid off. This is heartbreaking. We love our jobs, the platform we’ve built, and the Bandcamp community. We’re glad we have our union — coworkers who have each other’s backs. We’ll be moving together to decide our next steps. On Wednesday we return to the bargaining table with Epic Games, and we’ll keep you updated. Love and solidarity to the whole Bandcamp community. Thank you for your support.

Attended seminars, fixed bugs, played chess (!), chilled out in a parc, yelled "Leeeroooooy Jeeeenkins"...

I'm open to being wrong, but for my money, "identify as"/"identifies as" is almost always a useless phrase.

"She identifies as a woman" => "She is a woman."

"They identify as Catholic." => "They are Catholic."

And so forth. The only utility I can see is to distance the act of identification from actual belonging (as in the classic journalistic twist, "Name Lastname, who identifies as non-binary, [proceeds to misgender them]"), or to discuss the fallibility of survey results ("well, 50% of the cohort identified as sanitation workers, but it's possibly because you said 'garbage people' instead").

In my opinion, it's just not a phrase you should use, unless you can articulate why a simple "is" or "are" doesn't work.

If google wasn't big enough to move the market, this would just be a story about google's downfall and vulnerability to competition.

But if google succeeds in keeping people on-site instead of visiting links, the incentives for people to create high-quality content fall through the floor. Whether you are a commercial provider funded by ads or an academic trying to disseminate something more than soundbite "featured snippets", google's efforts undercut your motives to create quality content.
