Years ago, I shifted my research, looking at how people argue for rights to the road which eventually led to a bike tour in the Netherlands.

It took 30 hours on a bicycle there to pinpoint what was different:

I felt safe.

Ever since, I have advocated for complete streets, and for increased transportation choices with a focus on gender/aging.
