@cdevries if Apple release desktop Mac with ARM then it'll all change. Exciting times ahead.
@Ian_soboroff I suspect Mac will transition to ARM. If they’re going to successful at that (and they will be, because they did 68000->PPC->Intel successfully) then they must already have ARM chips that are competitive with desktop Intel chips. They can’t release a slower Mac and convince everyone to sell they faster Mac for a slower one.

Inevitable? Apple will, apparently, stop using Intel chips in Mac from 2020! They will, reportedly, use their own (probably ARM) chips.

Apple Plans to Use Its Own Chips in Macs From 2020, Replacing Intel

Apple Inc. is planning to use its own chips in Mac computers beginning as early as 2020, replacing processors from Intel Corp., according to people familiar with the plans.

SIGIR 2018 eCom workshop is running a data challenge: large-scale taxonomy classification.  The goal is to predict each product’s category as defined in the taxonomy tree given product's title.  We're using real-world data provided by Rakuten.

@cdevries Sorry, that research project ran out of money. No more ARM boards at the moment.

There was a workshop on the next new thing in #IR just a couple of months ago #SWIRL. My guess is privacy preserving IR using homomorphic encryption will become important in industry. Someone will crack the problem and it will suddenly have a wealth of uses and interest from researchers.
Since we're all promoting our SIGIR workshops, I will too. The SIGIR 2018 eCommerce search and recommendation workshop: https://sigir-ecom.github.io
