Different love hotels have responded to safety & payment issues in different ways. Hotel Forum uses the “classic” method: literally locking guests in their rooms. To leave, you have to pay at a machine inside the room to unlock the door.

Paging @pluralistic Google is finally dis-enshittifying AI Overview. This is a massive improvement.

If they get it to all zeroes it’ll be perfect.

Grammarly quietly made an #AI to sell bad writing advice using famous writers' names. They quickly had to backtrack as soon as people found out.

This gamble reflects a broader trend in the #tech industry: everyone is shipping features as quickly as an #LLM can write lines of code, with no way to spot problems until something breaks or someone sues them.

Vibe prototyping replaced thinking through things. But without direction, moving faster is worthless.

Grammarly shows how prototyping turned into an excuse for not thinking

The industry is in the grip of directionless urgency, and users are paying the price. Strategy has been replaced with half-baked features.

The Product Picnic

I don't think people fully appreciate how apocalyptic things are for US science. I haven't received any new funding since 2024, but I'm still ok since grants are typically for 3 years. This means next year I will be completely out of funding and will have to fire everyone in the lab. It's not great.

In my 25-year career, I’ve never NOT had funding. I typically have 4 to 8 grants, which you need if you’re running an observation science program and have a technician, students, and postdocs.

When I was a teenager in the '90s, my boyfriend at the time gave me his old skateboard.

The trucks and wheels were fine, but the deck was heavily used and the design had been scraped off most of the bottom, so I took some paint markers and decorated it by painting a black and white checkerboard background with a large stormtrooper head in the foreground because Star Wars and ska were two of my favorite things at the time.

I was mostly just a poser and barely rode it and it remained in the back of my car for several years until I was at a sporting goods store and saw a kid doing tricks on a demo deck and I told him he was really good and he said "Thanks! I have to practice here because I don’t have a skateboard."

At that moment, I remembered my backseat skateboard and told him he could have it, but warned him that the "graphic" was kind of nerdy so he was more than welcome to draw/paint over it.

I went out to my car and grabbed the skateboard and brought it to the front of the store where the kid was waiting and he flipped it over and said "Whoa! Star Wars and ska?!? These are two of my favorite things!"

I’m so glad that skateboard finally found the right owner.

The other was a student who asked if I thought we could get back to a world where people care about art. I turned that back to the audience and asked "Who here cares about art?" Every single hand went up. Not a random sample of the population to be sure, but the question asker was also not alone.

The first is a student who asked how to resist pressure to use "AI" without being a stick in the mud. I said: Be a stick in the mud! Help create the solid ground that others might stand on too.

I shared this story with Sam Cole on the @404mediaco podcast, too:

Unfortunately, the recording doesn't include the Q&A. Two things I remember from that:

Some Japanese netizens are now jokingly asking whether this means they'll also be able to buy FamiChiki at 7-Elevens 😅

How's THIS for a brand collision? Family Mart has struck a deal with 7 Bank, run by rival 7-Eleven's parent company 7&i Holdings, to replace all its ATMs in 16,000 stores nationwide with specially branded 7 Bank ATMs in a bid to offer greater convenience to customers.
