@badlogic I don't like being a reply guy, but actually XMPP is doing at least as well now as it was doing before Google Talk adopted it, there are still XMPP servers floating around, there are still XMPP clients. So a niche product, XMPP, is still a niche product. It did not disappear.
ActivityPub will be fine even if Meta tries anything fishy, just because hobbyists that are doing their little thing now will most likely still do it afterwards.
