@SleepyCatten yeah the positive news is relative. I think it’s telling to see who is smiling and celebrating this morning, and it’s not the right. Reminds me a bit of the UK after the 2017 elections. Spain is funny - I would say that socially it’s possibly a bit less embracing of diversity than the UK, but politically they seem so far ahead of us. I really hope things go well there because it’s a big part of my life. In fact, I’m about to spend most of august there.
I can see that Spain has slipped out of the UK headlines since the fascists’ pitiful performance in the elections yesterday. Disappointed are we? 😂
About to spend almost a month in Spain. Looking hopeful that they won't have literal fascists in government. But we'll see over the next hour or two!
@SleepyCatten yay! Good luck and enjoy!
Chelsea Manning: Be Gay, Do Grimes
Gosh this is depressing. Labour have already decided to be a placeholder government like the Blair years were. No denying they did some good things, and will, but ultimately an opportunity to do something even mildly different squandered. So little to say about genuine, obvious and costly injustices in the UK, like brexit, an antiquated electoral system, a cruel migration system and inter generational inequality. It’s avoidance politics.
https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2023/jul/09/rupert-murdoch-keir-starmer-labour-party-power-no-10Champagne with Rupert Murdoch … Keir Starmer’s Labour is preparing for power
The party is courting business and winning the media magnate’s ear, but team Starmer is at pains to show they take nothing for granted on the road to No 10
The GuardianMarched at Pride in London on Saturday with Positive East, an HIV charity. It was extremely validating and positive after all the negativity and noise over the past year. We heard there was some disruption but it wasn’t a major part the day for us - we had tired legs like always.
I’m not against help for people with mortgages caught out by the interest rate rise (not as economically secure as outright owners, but crucially a more politically swingy demographic). I do think it’s completely wrong to ponder this help without first helping renters who by and large for many years have had it far, far worse. At worst this is just more redistribution to those who are better off.
@TatoGremlin Armstrong has got serious ball to be weighing in on this debate
While the idea of Putin being ousted is appealing, I’d prefer it wasn’t by the head of a Nazi militia that operates by using torture, rape and murder against civilians.
