@pinkprius Oh phew. I mean, if I could pay for unlimited data for certain services and it was cheaper than having universal data, then that'd be cool
The problem I see with that is it creates an unfair advantage for those services and makes it harder for new services to enter the market
@pinkprius Couldn't have said it better myself!
The CRTC (telecommunications regulatory body here in Canada) ruled out any of that sort of behaviour country-wide about a year and a half ago.
Music streaming services were given special treatment, not counting towards mobile data caps
@brandon @pinkprius I remember when mobile data in Canada was like MEO #dumbnet and I don't miss it at all.
Rogers Wireless 3G was like that when it was introduced...about a half dozen sites were unmetered and it was a per megabyte charge for anything else. There were so many complaints to CRTC not just from mobile users but content providers it eventually lead to net neutrality here.
>per megabyte charge
Holy hell am I glad to not know what that feels like. It sounds like a terrible day in the life of a mobile data user...except it's every day!
I feel like the CRTC needs to make a statement against the FCC though right now.
@brandon the Prime Minister has already expressed concern publicly at least though I can't say if it would amount to anything.
Given the adversarial nature of the US in trade relations if US providers took too much advantage of deregulation to the detriment of Canadian content providers it could spark a trade dispute, though that is a long shot.
