Working on a medium post called "It's Time: Why and How to Quit Twitter and Join Mastodon"

If there are any particularly strong sentiments you have that you think should be included in this piece, gimme a shout. Bulk of writing tonight, publish tomorrow.

@mykola My take is simple:
Twitter bans people for using strong language towards fascists while giving the fascists 280 characters to better express their hate.
@gargath @mykola
this. directed 'insults' are somehow worse than slurs and threats towards entire communities of people.

@mykola I would encourage the quickest of readthroughs of earlier Medium posts about Mastodon. not only because I wrote one of them, but also because links are nice. shoulders of giants etc.

here's me:

here's 13 others from the early days, collected:

here is a helpful intro to the whole mastodon situation:

the mastodon tag does include references to the band, but here goes:

happy writing :3

Mastodon, pineapples, social media and other unanswered questions

Interesting things are happening over at Mastodon. If you have had your ears tuned to the hacker grapevines, you will most likely have heard that Mastodon is an open source federated social network…

@mykola Twitter always felt like living in a centralist and absolutist state to me. Lots of people there and a lot of chaos. I'm quite new here but my first impression of mastodon was like being in a village that is connected to other villages (aka servers) but still... seems like people are looking after each other here a lot more.
@mykola I think it's important that an article like that be up-front about the learning curve, and the current lack of a method (they're working on it) to change instances and take your followers with you. Take a look at some of @chuckwendig 's comments about things he's noticed as a new user, they largely hit things on the head.
@mykola No Nazis. No comicsgate white supremacist jerks that Twitter won't suspend. NO TRUMP.

@mykola Why to quit Twitter: Nazis, white supremacists, organized harassment, racism, misogyny, toxic political propaganda, etc ad nauseum.

Why to join Mastodon: We ain't got none of that bullshit. Also, they're called "toots" 👌

@mykola for me, the open source non corporate aspects are tops. There's a passage in Neal Stephenson's classic "In the beginning there was the command line" that sums the feel of Mastodon to me:
@mykola False promises, basically. We keep hearing "oh, we're trying SO HARD to make Twitter a safer, more respectful place!", yet the crackdown on trolls, bots, and fringe groups never happens. At some point you just have to assume they're not going to make those necessary changes, and find a new place to go.
@mykola Which parts have you already covered? "Better privacy", "no promoted tweets", and "good chance of engaging in meaningful conversation with strangers about topics of interest" all are good ones.

@mykola
that the argument of reach is false.
One can have a very high reach on proprietary networks, that's true. But it can be any moment taken, by just you sharing a unpopular opinion or cause goverment wanting so.
If one is a journalist or activist the argument of reach is only aplying if one is privilidged not getting cencored

Using those networks is brining reach to networks censoring through a centralized power structure.
You're ignorance is silencing others voices.

@paulfree14 if I’m understanding you you’re suggesting that it’s a mistake to block unfriendly people here?

@mykola uuh no. that's far of my opinion.

ppl say proprietary social networks are good, because you can reach many.

that's as a general statement false.
some can have a great reach. but twitter and co can take it anytime...and they do.

then if one says reach is the reason one uses twitter over fediverse, it's just once ignorance over the cencorship of others.

@paulfree14 I see what you're saying now, sorry for misunderstanding your original post!

I think all of these tools have their place, but yeah - risk of centralized service is that you can easily be turned off or the company can shut down.

But it is absolutely true that twitter posts can reach more people. But I actually think of this as a liability!

@mykola including some of the https://ioo.coop/ points surrounding user ownership of their digital infrastructure.

> Online platforms are transforming our workplaces, relationships, and societies in some troubling ways.

> Huge monopolies are capturing important markets like search, transportation, and social networking

> Users have virtually no control over the platforms that affect their lives

@mykola

> If users owned their own social media, they could set terms of service in which they keep control over personal data

> Co-op platforms can cooperate with each other by building open-source software for common use

At the end of the day, it is retaking the internet as it is supposed to be: decentralized, resilient and in each individual user in control.

@mykola I'm not sure it is OK to frame them as alternatives ("either you use Twitter or you use Mastodon"). They are different. Uses cases like technological/event watch are not well supported in Mastodon (lack of search function) and Twitter is still the best for that. Also, because of banning/blocking, Mastodon does not guarantee that user A can see user B. So, the two systems have different strengths and weaknesses, I use both of them.

@bortzmeyer I'm less concerned with presenting a false dichotomy. My thrust is (1) Twitter is increasingly and obviously run by white supremacists, and (2) there IS a viable alternative, mastodon, and here are some reasons why it's actually better.

I realize it's not 1:1, that they're different tools, etc. But this case can still be made, I think.

@mykola "Twitter is increasingly and obviously run by white supremacists" OK, after such paranoid delusion, I have nothing to add.
And yet here you are messaging me! Weird! @bortzmeyer
