Toot-Toot, Motherfucker: Early Thoughts On Mastodon

I joined Mastodon at the behest of Greg Pak. You can find me here. I have thoughts, if you care to read them. (Note: these are thoughts from a NON-TECH PERSON, who is increasingly more interested i…

@chuckwendig this is exactly how i felt yesterday, although the sense I'm getting logging in today is that, post-excitement, it's going to be a lot more like LJ was, at least for me. Much smaller, more niche, more honest. Not somewhere you have to worry about your mad racist aunt joining. Not full of the kind of mean boys who troll to fill the void in their lives where people should be. Just people, shooting the shit, talking to each other.
@chuckwendig lines up pretty well with my experience so far -- although in your inimitable style. Still feels very much like an experiment, it'll be interesting to see what sticks.
@Vicorva I'm interested! Hopeful! But also it wouldn't surprise me to see the frustration level be too high for folks to leave.
@chuckwendig it's a choice between familiar but shit-filled and new but headache inducing right now. But hey! This is clearly still an infant site. Maybe it'll grow up user-friendly.

@chuckwendig I am enjoying it here so far, too!
@chuckwendig Great take. Agreed regarding the positives & the pitfalls. Here's hoping. 🤞

@chuckwendig Hey, thanks for writing your impressions! That's very invaluable to understand how to help people that get lost here.

I'm surprised the email metaphor didn't work for you, especially since you're technologically fluent enough to understand BBSs. :]

@chuckwendig Thanks for introducing me to this...whatever this is. Seems nice. Looking forward to exploring it.

@chuckwendig yeah, insurance against bad admins seems like a problem they'll have to solve.

Fighting rats: maybe if the captains of a ship are motivated to get rid of the rats, they can get help from crew and other captains to eject them if there are suddenly way too dang many in one place.

@chuckwendig Hi Chuck! I just finished reading this on Facebook and it was boosted in my instance writing.exchange

@chuckwendig
Really enjoyed the article. I've had a lot of the same personal concerns about Mastodon, but wasn't sure how to articulate them.

It seems like a nice place, but it also seems like the same promises every social media site makes at the beginning
