Wrangling Mastodon admins: like herding cats. Feral cats, that haven't been de-clawed. Also the cats have deep-seated ideological differences
@nolan I desperately want to hear about this
@lolkat It's all in https://admins.town and https://im.cybre.space/#/room/#mastodon_moderation:matrix.org for all to see; you'll find it's probably a lot less exciting than I'm making it out here. 😁
@nolan eyyy I study moderators and online governance for a living, you'd be surprised.
@lolkat You should join, then! Need mods who know better about this stuff than me :D

@nolan @lolkat I work for the US Federal Goverment - does that help lol.

Nofftopia has a TeamSpeak server for admins @ ts.nofftopia.com as the server address

@nolan gimme two weeks to wrap up some writing deadlines and I'll be all over that
@lolkat @nolan also, thinking someone speaking out against abuse is just as bad as the abuser isn't an ideological difference. It's a moral deficiency.
@csilverman @lolkat I like to believe that no human is beyond redemption, but yeah you have to draw the line somewhere. I've been leaning a lot from the wisdom of other admins TBH

@nolan @lolkat I wasn't going to go so far as to say they're beyond redemption, although I think someone whose deeply held ideology makes no difference between general-purpose troublemakers and abuse victims comes pretty damned close.

I'll admit I'm biased because I've seen this so many times: male admins dismissing harassment concerns as women being women, if they don't like it they can leave, etc.

@csilverman @nolan Ugh, that's depressing. Definitely a major downside of centralized platforms where there are male admins who are dismissive of womens' concerns.

It's an important issue to think about for platforms like Mastodon. The discussions of governance on here have been both fascinating and terrifying.
