Damn, the federated timeline is mostly a Japanese spam-o-rama. Nothing wrong with Japanese per se (I'm trying off and on to learn it), but it's just not what I want to see. Makes me wish Mastodon had a language filter setting that I could set to only show posts in languages that I can read.
@Enfors Hopefully as more users use Mastodon, there can be more useful features to make it a meaningful experience for each individual user, while maintaining the decentralized aspect (without big daddy dictating all the rules and changing the landscape to fit shareholder's goals rather than user's goals)
@celes @Enfors Hey I just had an idea. Mastodon could add some sort of setting/API call that would allow instance admins to set a default language and optionally federate only with other instances of the same language if they want.
@garrettw @Enfors But it seems like each instance has many users posting in other languages though (the instances don't seem to be segregated by language). So not sure if it will be effective.
@celes @Enfors so then maybe the solution is to allow users to set languages for their profile so that their feed is limited to posts by other users who are set to those languages, while still allowing them to look up any user's account.
@garrettw @Enfors Yes, that'd be really great I think. @ken What do you think? And who can we forward such a suggestion to?
@ken @garrettw @celes I would guess there's feature requests for that on file already, but I don't know.

@Enfors @celes @garrettw yes this has been discussed since a month ago. This is preview of what might be coming up - https://github.com/tootsuite/mastodon/pull/2361

This is more on the technical discussion - https://github.com/tootsuite/mastodon/issues/691

For developers, normally they'll search GitHub for duplicated issues before raising new one. For rest of users, I believe @maloki is the single point of contact for feedback (kindly correct me if otherwise!)

@ken @Enfors @celes @garrettw I don't want to be a single point, but for right now, kinda yeah.
Delegation is required!!
