The local feed is the only one worth paying attention to, it seems. The federated feed is overrun with Japanese spam. :/
And what's with the nsfw tag being used for non-nsfw content? Smh.
@garrettw I agree about the local feed. On many instances, it's even worse - the local feed is filled with an assortment of languages. Seems strange to me that not each instance has an "official" clearly advertised language, with all other languages being discouraged.
@Enfors I've seen some people have that same language complaint, only to be shamed for it when people say they shouldn't hate/discriminate/etc. but that's not the point. Being able to control the language used in one's feed determines the usefulness of the feed to that person. And a feed that's low on usefulness will drive users away.
@garrettw @Enfors Yeah I had to manually hide/mute users who post in entirely different languages to clear up my feed, since I'm not able to understand their toots anyway. I'm personally quite amazed at the high Mastodon uptake in the Japanese community. It's fascinating.
@celes @garrettw Yes! I've muted some people too. It seems Mastodon has caught on a lot in Japan and France. Both of those are countries where English language skills are relatively low, I think. I wonder if that has anything to do with it? Could Twitter have been seen as "too English" to them, giving them a reason to search for something else, perhaps?

@Enfors @garrettw @celes yes Japan and France have the most users. There is a large Japan instance which is created by a illustrations community company which bring on a lot of users. Another large Japan instance was crowdfunded quickly to over $10k monthly to support its growth.

France loves freedom and open-source thus user adoption is very fast. Germany has many users as well since Eugen the creator was studying there.

@ken @celes @garrettw Hmm, that's interesting. I never thought of the French that way, but I'm sure you're right.
@Enfors @garrettw @landvarx @celes oh Enfors and Landvarx I saw that today is your first day using Mastodon. I wrote a beginner's FAQ which you may find useful for some quick answers - https://medium.com/tebelorg/my-first-10-days-on-mastodon-fediverse-f6f1d73db8d7
