I don't want good, elegant, well-engineered social media software goddammit. I want trashy, broken, hacked-together pieces of shit that actually are sensitive to and meet the needs of me and my community.
I would much rather be on software hacked together by a small group of queer friends to suit their personal needs than any large-scale open-source project. Regardless of how well it's administrated or how nicely it handles its pull requests. IMHO.
Unfortunately queer friends tend to be pretty busy folk so for now Mastodon is what we're stuck with.
If it meets the needs of you and your community, it's well-designed.
Trashy, broken, hacked together software that only its existing community likes is a hurdle; a paddle used for hazing, and the OSS community defense of software like that is regular ol' gatekeeping.
Design is how a thing works.
