I don't want good, elegant, well-engineered social media software goddammit. I want trashy, broken, hacked-together pieces of shit that actually are sensitive to and meet the needs of me and my community.
Here's today's #take: Mastodon is too big and trying to be too much for too many people and it's going to fail all of them unless it gets its shit together and finds ways to better help them help themselves.
This is not even on the docket right now in Masto dev. Not even on the horizon of things to consider. That one social network can't do it all and we need to find ways to empower communities to step in and build and technologies where we have failed. That instance administrators might have widely differing needs and there needs to be standardized ways of approaching and communicating those problems.
IDK I feel like I've said all this a million times before.

I would much rather be on software hacked together by a small group of queer friends to suit their personal needs than any large-scale open-source project. Regardless of how well it's administrated or how nicely it handles its pull requests. IMHO.

Unfortunately queer friends tend to be pretty busy folk so for now Mastodon is what we're stuck with.

Anyway I'm done talking about this I'm just tired of takes about what Mastodon should or shouldn't do as if the problem is merely one side not recognizing the truth in the other's statements and not the entire conceit of the project as a centralized, one-size-fits-all solution.
If I sound bitter it's because my friends are being hurt.
