@JessSloan I'm a sucker for most of the annual #CanLit short lists so mostly contemporary. One of my favourites: Fugitive Pieces (Anne Michaels). Recent reads: Daddy Lenin, Fifteen Dogs, All the Light We Cannot See; The Back of the Turtle; Us Conductors. Are you also a fan?
@rocketrobin I am. My husband (@thurloat) was reading Us Conductors and he was enjoying it. I've picked up Fifteen Dogs a few times but haven't pulled the trigger yet. Though, admittedly, these days it's hard to make the time to read anything that needs real concentration. We have an active seven month old :)
@JessSloan @thurloat Us Conductors was great, though not a story arc I was able to anticipate. Also enjoyed 15 Dogs, and tho an easy read, I felt like I should be picking up a univ. course to map it out. 🚀 🚀
7 mo. old! Best of times/most challenging of times - enjoy! At that point I believe my wife and I were burrowing through Jack Whyte's pre-Arthurian cycle - easy to pick up and put down.

My favourite Canadian authors are Laura Best, Natalie Corbett Sampson, and Margaret Atwood.
I'm currently reading a graphic novel version of the Star Wars trilogy. Ezra likes the pictures and the sound effects when Chewie or Artoo speak.

I agree on books for which sound effects are a match. My kids are teens now but still remember most of these - real or improvised - and will interject them ad hoc into conversations :) Plus Star Wars, of course...
@rocketrobin I'm looking forward to the television interpretation of The Handmaid's Tale. It'll be interesting to see how they tie it in with current events.
Natalie just released a new book this past February "Take These Broken Wings". I enjoyed it quite a bit.
Have to start them young :)
@JessSloan Hope it's good! Looks like they've picked a strong cast and Metacritic appears to love it already. It may be hard to get Natasha Richardson, Faye Dunaway and Robert Duvall out of my head...
I'll look for Natalie's book, and agree, never too young - a skill that lasts forever and nothing unlocks more opportunities or rewards IMHO.
@rocketrobin I did not know there was already a film made from the book. Clearly, we need to watch it immediately.
@JessSloan It's been awhile since I saw it, but I remember being impressed. Got mixed reviews as I recall. And, of course, it speaks very differently to its time than the new one will - which I really look forward to. :)
@rocketrobin Plan of action: re-read the book, watch the previous film, then watch the television series. That's what I'll be doing for the next little while.
