hi all! i have a thing to share with you! my new instance is ready and it is a little different...

toots on this instance are ephemeral; they disappear after a while (between 5 minutes and an hour) depending on the current phase of the moon.

something glitchy, something witchy...

feel free to boost

let's
break
this
software!!!

@bea what a fun idea! boosted. is this instance sharing the same cloud services as your first instance, like you were planning to have it do?
@cs yes it is, so if it blows up it will take this one out too (;
@bea what is the main thinking behind having ephemeral toots? (also, idk how the federation system works but do they remain cached in instances that federate with yours?)

@yuki_the_maven

1) it's for fun mostly, or for art or whatever? i like the idea. we don't really need them to stick around forever do we? or if we do well then there's every other instance ever

2) they should not remain cached in other instances because they are processed just the same as if the user deletes the toot. a message is sent out to other instances telling them that the toot was deleted and that they should follow suit, which afaik they do.

@bea thanks for the explanation! *runs to secure a handle*
the case of not keeping toots around is interesting, sometimes I do enjoy reading what I thought 1 week ago and comparing to now, some other times I'd totally like for a drunk toot to disappear from everyone's memory
I dunno about Mastodon, but gnusocial caches posts…
@bea Just keep in mind that when you federate the external servers cannot be relied upon to delete the messages.
@maiyannah oh yeah, i trust nothing outside the instances i control that's for sure
@bea this sounds awesome, but how does this work in a federated system?

@ZackF lol i think i need to write a FAQ that contains only this question

when you delete a toot it is removed from your instance and your instance sends messages to the ones it federates with notifying them of the deletion so that they can delete it as well. whether or not they DO delete it is up to them, so we can't guarantee that remote copies of the toot are delete, just state that they should be.

@ZackF actually can i copy your question verbatim to put in my about page?
@bea Yeah. Sorry for the delay. I hope this didn't fade into the glitchy ether.

@b
Laughed out loud at:

@bea Oh wow this is so interesting I love this a lot
