Just playing with setting up mastodon on Digital Ocean. Fortunately there's an excellent how-to here
http://digitalmind.io/post/deploying-mastodon-on-digital-ocean
How does toot.twit.tv sound?
@leo I love it, personally.
@leo Your job seems like fun, though I suppose it comes with plenty of stress at times, too. You're basically your own boss though, aren't you?
Thank you so much for sharing all your findings with us! :smile_cat:
@Euphoria I'm totally my own boss, as long as my wife agrees. :smile:
TWiT.tv was my response to years of slogging in the mass media coal mines.
That's what I thought, @leo . I remember hearing you say it or reading it it somewhere at some point, though the part about your wife agreeing is a revelation. It's so nice that you're such great partners and don't let your work interfere with that. <3
@Euphoria Well @Lisa is also the CEO of TWiT! In other words, my boss.
That is very cool, @leo @Lisa ! Not many couples manage that way, but I so love learning about those that do, as I aspire to such a relationship myself, once my perfect partner appears. Hopefully I won't have to wait for sentient androids for that, cuz I'm sure I'll be really freakin' old by then!
@leo @Euphoria I remember when we both worked for TechTV (me as a freelance). E3 was fun sometimes back then. So, semi-elected times! ;)

@OldandConfused @leo Ah, good old TechTV. I was so happy to find it and record the shows on my DVR. I learned so much, especially from Leo, and had fun getting my Mac to do things I wouldn't have thought of otherwise. Back then I never would've imagined I'd /ever/ be using this old Windows rig.

#NeverSayNever
#PeopleChange

@leo I was wondering about the utility of a private instance given how hard it seems to be to find folks on other instances.
Or am I maybe missing a trick?
@leo
toot.twit.tv sounds great. I hope you have time to maintain the server.
@leo it's not too hard to do using docker. I did it pretty quickly with toot.memtech.website for our local tech community
@vongrippen Yeah I'm done. Just waiting on getting the subdomain created and our twit.tv cert installed.
@leo I'd vote for that. Though given your admiration for the work of ScooterX and the other gatekeepers of irc.twit.tv, aren't you concerned about the lack of moderation (hardly the word, draconian would be better) facilities?
@User21952 We'll see. I'll make it a private invite-only instance at first.
@leo That would work, it's only the universal access of IRC (ignoring exclusions for Tor, VPN, privacy services essentially) that requires the constant pruning of the audience. It would be interesting to see how many denizens of #TWiTLive would decamp to Mastodon. The comfortable incumbents (bleak, Loquacious1, Chumly etc.) wouldn't I think, it would be a loss if they did.
@User21952 I wouldn't necessarily want to replace IRC with Mastodon, but I would like an asynchronous place for fans to interact. Chat requires quite a commitment.
@leo You get any further on this idea Leo? The Digital Salon with reputations from around the world, some in text, others streamed, moderated, private Could be a winner in a world of contraction.
@leo i personally found this centos guide to guide me setting up my instance
https://medium.com/@JungleStrike/deploying-a-mastodon-instance-on-centos-7-5073bd1ad265
seems a bit more complete, perhaps too over the top. still useful regardless.
@notjeff Great article, but it's a LOT more complicated to install Mastodon from scratch than it is using Docker.
@leo yup, but I really dislike docker personally, i put mine in a LXC, good read about the pitfalls of using docker in production: https://thehftguy.com/2017/02/23/docker-in-production-an-update/
@notjeff This instance is just for testing. I doubt I'd use Docker for production, or Digital Ocean for that matter. We have our own servers.
