Hot take: the reason a lot of techies are upset about Mastodon is that it's the first pure and beautiful thing our industry has produced in like 5 years
@nolan There really is a lot of salt out there, isn't there?
@nolan and that's mostly because the industry has had fuck-all to do with it ;)
@nolan not approaching the matter with an appropriate amount of gravitas, instead going for incessant vore shitposts and calling their things TOOT and all
@nolan let's be honest. That's a tall order. The last 5 years have massive wins in cryptocurrencies, decentralized bittorrent, Riot communications, better graphics rendering engine, uprising of gnome-shell, etc. Mastodon is super cool but lets avoid hyperbole 😊
@luisbg heh yeah I'm probably overselling it. but seriously I haven't felt so pumped about something since... I dunno, Firefox OS? Signal? Guess that makes it <5 years though. πŸ˜›
@nolan I'm also super excited, just trying to stay contained. I've been burnt before heh
@luisbg If I have to go cynical again I swear I'm becoming a farmer
@nolan tbh i'd go as far as to say our industry *didn't* produce it, and that's another source of animosity
@cubeghost can't believe how real this feels
@nolan I think the backend being in Ruby contributes to its beauty ;)
@nolan however...i do believe it's a good thing we have something new to try.. whether it successes or fails, doesn't matter. we would all have learnt from it πŸ‘
@nolan hmmm...i don't think your statement counts as purely empirical 😊
