is it common thought for digital library managers to think subject headings are worthless? I mean, I know keyword searching is great and all, but I'm pretty sure I have read over and over again that keyword searching and subject headings are complementary.
@EthanDF We still have them in our digital collections!
@EthanDF If you want to do LOD eventually, won't you want controlled/external vocabulary for subjects?

@annaneat oh, well, there is that. I assume our DL manager thinks that Google will remove the need for that. Of course, the whole Empty Vessel argument supports that, too.

I should, our DL also does no entity management at all. So authors aren't controlled either - which to me, is an even bigger issue for LD

@EthanDF @annaneat oh yeah ours does noooooooooooooo proper entity management but I can't get to that if I don't have good stuff to work from. :feels:
@EthanDF Yeah, I'm interested in seeing where our IMLS pilot for names wrangling in digital collections ends up - what sort of system ends up being good for that regionally, considering that many digital libraries don't have that ability baked into their systems
@annaneat now I am interested, too!
@EthanDF I will let you know when our final report type thing is out :)
@EthanDF I've just been spending a little time with the excellent "Still a lot to lose: the role of controlled vocabulary in keyword searching" by Gross, Taylor, and Joudrey. (http://repository.stcloudstate.edu/lrs_facpubs/45/) Lots of good stuff there if you're trying to make a case!
@EthanDF And hey, Mastodon is suddenly surfacing posts from 6 days ago? Cool, I guess?
@spellproof will try to add quotes into my conversation with her surreptitiously.
