When recommending to your friends, give the other instances some love too: https://instances.mastodon.xyz/ It looks like mastodon.social is under even heavier load than yesterday right now
@Gargron if you want im starting an "spawn" page for new user, for select server before inscription =P
@Gargron in some futur it's possible to just move a account to a other side of mastodon and keep all TooT and follower?
@Gargron Maybe block registration and put a message on the front page ?
@gargron hui, the list has grown since yesterday
@Gargron I'd love to hop on mastodon.xyz but it seems like you see different replies if you're on the main instance vs the other ones. 😕 https://mastodon.social/@Murassa/1474784
@nolan @Murassa The instance of the original poster receives all replies directed to it. Other instances receive only those replies that they would normally receive from following the authors, i.e. original poster's instance does not redistribute replies to its post. I don't see how it's a problem: original author sees all replies, if you get mentioned, you receive that also. You're only missing out on stuff that doesn't affect you much.
@Gargron @Murassa Wouldn't this discourage people from joining non-Mastodon.social instances though? You're missing out on what the vast bulk of other users are seeing.
@nolan @Murassa I don't see how. As more people follow each other, the number of missing stuff on each individual instance goes down.
@Gargron @Murassa I dunno, that may work in a world where multiple instances have roughly the same number of users, but today there's essentially a huge UX improvement by being on mastodon.social because that way you see the full conversation… 😕
@Gargron Why don't you implement a hard limit on the number of accounts registered on the same instance ?
@Gargron Something the owner could configure, like "40k users max", and then the users would be redirected to other instances if they want to register
@Gargron Wouldn't it be a good idea to close the inscriptions on mastodon.social to redirect the traffic to other instances ?
@Gargron Yeah, i think you're about to hockey-stick. I'm def seeing folks pick up on Mastodon and pile in :)
@gargron Is there a way to view the public TL without an account like one can with GNU Social? I recommended to a bunch of my followers to check it out to get a feel for an instance before registering, but I'm not sure how that would work with mastodon.
@Gargron yes this instance is actually the best for me
@Gargron I think this would feel a lot safer to me if there was an oauth way to hot-import my whole account from another instance if it was going to go down. Makes it almost zero cost to hang out on an unproven instance.
@Gargron New users having to know about things like instances is the thing most likely to limit the growth of mastodon
@Gargron Just moved across to xyz instance (:*
@Gargron does mastodon.social have any means to create a cluster for an instance?
@nielsk mastodon.social is clustered between 5 virtual private servers
@nielsk if you're asking about the software being capable of scaling horizontally - yes
@Gargron ok…I don't want to know then the load they have right now. Is there something like a patreon for donating to the project?

@Gargron nice article !

It might be nice to add an image to the post so it entices more ppl to read it when shared on other social media sites :)

Great work btw :)
