I really, really appreciate seeing so many follows from mastodon.xyz (a different, new instance). When telling your friends about Mastodon, don't always point them to mastodon.social - point them to mastodon.xyz, icosahedron.website, social.tchncs.de, gay.crime.team etc etc

@Gargron It would be great if the mastodon.social signup screen did that.

Even better if we had a website to the general Mastodon project which we could point people to, that offered signup for various instances.

@hisham_hm @Gargron Gargron, if you want help setting up a landing page or anything, I don't claim to be super skilled, but I'm happy to help.

I'll see if I can get something up on mastadon.social for starters, or maybe someone can help me turn mastadon.social into another instance!

@b_cavello @hisham_hm If mastadon and mastodon .social were both different instances people would be suuuper confused
@Gargron @hisham_hm @b_cavello I feel like new people would be a little bit less confused about federation if mastodon the software didn't have the same name as the main instance!
@tomharris @b_cavello @hisham_hm This is true and obvious in hindsight. I think I was betting on the .social TLD differentiating it.
@Gargron @hisham_hm @b_cavello A little mistake only. Considering what a super job you've done on everything else, we'll forgive you
@Gargron @hisham_hm @b_cavello @tomharris Heh. When I was writing Poli's message I literally went, "To make sure people understand I'm welcoming them to the fediverse and not just the instance, I'll say 'welcome to mastodon.social.'" :no_good_tone1:
@tomharris @b_cavello @hisham_hm @gargron i think this is important so the potencial new user don't have to search for his/her first instance to join to...(have a look at gnusocial)
@milan @Gargron @hisham_hm @tomharris I never played many MMO games, but it's not too uncommon to have a disambiguation screen with server stats, right? Maybe we can make something like that so people can get to less busy instances...
@b_cavello @tomharris @hisham_hm @gargron i would like it so much to just let my server point to another domain but it would result into federation trouble :sob:
@Gargron @tomharris @b_cavello @milan wouldn't it be possible to implement something like email forwarding?
@Gargron @hisham_hm Hee hee! It could say "hey, if you wanna log into mastodon head over here" but yeah
😅
Just trying to help distribute the load better

@b_cavello @Gargron I was thinking more like old email providers which offered you lots of domains to pick in a combo box:

Sign up: [_______]@[_______][v]

People would treat different instances just like email addresses.

@Gargron we need a landing page (doesn't have to be hosted here) and they need different icons so people can just click a cute looking thing and get on w/it (no prerequisite explaining users about federation first)
@Gargron so Mastodon can only scale by creating entirely new instances? A single instance can't scale out to multiple machines?
@sixbitproxywax It very well can and does. This one's running on 5 servers.
@Gargron what exactly is Mastodon.xyz, then, and why should we redirect people to it?
@sixbitproxywax a different instance
@Gargron well, yes, but why do they need to be on it instead of this one of this one can scale. What is the difference between the two?
@sixbitproxywax The point of this network is federation, if you put all eggs in one basket (this instance) that's no good.

@Gargron I'm not following why that is the case. From the perspective of cultural, social, etc issues, federation is clearly beneficial, but if mastodon.xyz is essentially a clone of Mastodon.social, then why is putting eggs in two baskets important?

I'm just not sure how we can convince people to not use this instance if the only argument is "because"

@sixbitproxywax @Gargron it also helps spread the cost around
@sonya @Gargron that doesn't sound very cost efficient
@sixbitproxywax efficiency isn't the main goal
@Gargron I shall add these to my Twitter thread.
@Gargron Is there a way to check a Mastodon node is not a rogue one?
@JustPingo Go on /about/more ("About this instance" on the frontpage) and see who the admin is and what they post, what its description is, rules
@Gargron a good feature would be to have an integrated support for PGP on that page =)
@Gargron thx for sharing mastodon.xyz if you want some help =D
@Gargron Are we able to switch our account between instances?
