I really, really appreciate seeing so many follows from mastodon.xyz (a different, new instance). When telling your friends about Mastodon, don't always point them to mastodon.social - point them to mastodon.xyz, icosahedron.website, social.tchncs.de, gay.crime.team etc etc
@Gargron so Mastodon can only scale by creating entirely new instances? A single instance can't scale out to multiple machines?
@sixbitproxywax It very well can and does. This one's running on 5 servers.
@Gargron what exactly is Mastodon.xyz, then, and why should we redirect people to it?
@sixbitproxywax a different instance
@Gargron well, yes, but why do they need to be on it instead of this one of this one can scale. What is the difference between the two?
@sixbitproxywax The point of this network is federation, if you put all eggs in one basket (this instance) that's no good.

@Gargron I'm not following why that is the case. From the perspective of cultural, social, etc issues, federation is clearly beneficial, but if mastodon.xyz is essentially a clone of Mastodon.social, then why is putting eggs in two baskets important?

I'm just not sure how we can convince people to not use this instance if the only argument is "because"

@sixbitproxywax @Gargron it also helps spread the cost around
@sonya @Gargron that doesn't sound very cost efficient
@sixbitproxywax efficiency isn't the main goal
