iTunes, man.

Spent a fair amount of time re-ripping CDs with iTunes (Music it's called now) and now all of those files are gone. Nowhere on my computer.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

What are people using to rip and manage music on Mac these days? I'd still like them to autosync to my phone if possible.

Thanks for your suggestions, all. I now have about 400 tabs open. (In addition to the usual number.)
@troublewithwords AAAARRRGGHHH.
Recently this has happened to me with smaller things.
I am considering doing some work UNCONNECTED to the internet and its so many other places for files to land ("the cloud") because maybe the files are going .... Somewhere OUt There.
@troublewithwords (now, I just don't do i-anything, either.... tho' I hae an ipad somewhere from a grant...)

@geonz Ugh. At some point I "cleansed" my music collection deleting some tracks I didn't want, and now Apple tries very hard to confuse me, tricking me into "buying" the "missing" tracks which I already own on CD, just the computer cannot see them.

I do not want to i-anything anymore, but it's a slow move. Also the hardware seems to last forever. If I can get away from an Apple music manager I'll be that much closer.

@troublewithwords sooooo… my setup is… actually pretty straightforward, and free of Apple bullshit. I rip to FLAC via XLD to a specified directory structure, which is watched and picked up by Roon (my music management system). Roon’s ‘Arc’ app allows me to stream my library anywhere outside my home network (the Roon app does LAN streaming — yes, that’s weird, but there’s a whole tedious thing…)

But it works, on all OSs on all mobile devices.

@octothorpe Makes me miss my classic Sonos. They used to be perfect, would connect to a network drive, bring your own speakers. Solid hardware. Then they went downmarket and enshitified quite a bit.

@troublewithwords I haven't used VLC in a while, but I'm pretty sure it can still rip CDs.

@meg Wow, forgot about that! Thank you.
(Today I learned there is no traffic cone emoji.)
@meg Oh, and it can rip VCDs! Some obsolete media in my collection comes back to life! Thank you.
@troublewithwords Glad to hear it! I've been thinking about switching back to it too. It boggles my mind that Apple Music cannot play FLAC and so many other media files after all this time.

@troublewithwords just to check, before you fully give up… when I rip CDs it puts them in the old iTunes Media folder from long ago (instead of the Music app media folder). So it might be worth checking there? I right click on the song in the music app and select “Show in Finder” to help locate the file.

Also, there used to be an app called PhoneView that would let you connect an iPhone and manually sync files, but I haven’t used that in years so I can say if it’s still viable.

@exkclamation I did a full disk search for all the audio formats that it might have saved and only got 1000-ish results, and I should have 5x that. Thanks for giving me the tip for alternate syncing software. I’ll scout around.

@troublewithwords I’m sorry to hear that… it’s disappointing how Apple has let iTunes/Music languish in service of their streaming offerings. I still use the app to organize and manage my large collection of MP3s here but it’s clear there are tons of bugs and problems with the neglected software. Hopefully you can find a better system.

Note: I’ve seen some open source and alternative ripping softwares you might try as well, but I’ve never used any personally.

@exkclamation Thanks. I’ve been managing this collection of music via iTunes since, oh, 2002 or so. Maybe too much cruft built up over the decades(!!). At this point I would not mind getting away from Apple’s tools to something more modern and universal.

@troublewithwords
I know it's not available on your tech ecosystem, but for several years I've used Poweramp to manage my ripped and purchased digital music. One of the best features: it only supports stored files, nothing else. No streaming, no music service, just a local music manager dedicated to sound quality.

All my CDs are in FLAC, stored on a micro SD card in my phone. It just works.

@donaldham Goodness, that looks like exactly the thing I want. And prices right and not a subscription.

But not enough to buy a new phone just yet. I’ll keep a bookmark around just because that sounds excellent.

@troublewithwords
For many years, Chromebooks have supported Android apps, so I have the same setup on my laptop. Not that a dedicated machine is the best idea, but likely v. cheap used ones can be had.
