We must teach people (i.e., JOURNALISTS) to stop saying #AI w/o distinguishing between #LLMs -- the source of endless harms like massive IP theft, academic cheating, psychosis, lies, environmental damage -- and purpose-built #ML systems, which advance science, medicine, and engineering.

A lot of media coverage of the ‘AI’ reading of the Herculaneum scrolls really fails to understand what’s happened here. There’s no language processing happening, the AI/ML is not trained on a corpus of texts or language. It can detect ink to see shapes. HUMAN EXPERTS are then transcribing the text.

@Nonya_Bidniss I think it’s fair to assume that when people talk disparagingly of AI, they are talking about the former. The average person is unlikely to have experience with the latter.
