This is why @pluralistic is always preaching about #DRM-free digital media and software. Sony is deleting over 500 movies customers paid for through the PlayStation Store because they don’t want to renew their license with Studio Canal. #enshittification
@chrisoliver @pluralistic I've been waiting for this to happen somewhere. I guess we're finally here. Sign of things to come?
@david @chrisoliver @pluralistic
This has happened on other platforms.
@raymaccarthy @chrisoliver @pluralistic I'm aware of some closing and taking the content with them - just haven't heard of one deciding not to renew a licence. I guess this is why I have been slowly moving away from these kind of platforms. Their practices are repellent.
@chrisoliver @pluralistic "Thank you" Well, nice way to finish it.
@blaubeer @pluralistic also “play has no limits” but I guess movies do…
@chrisoliver
I laughed out loud at "PLAY HAS NO LIMITS" at the bottom of the announcement. Seems like play has at least one limit.
@pluralistic
@kyle90
No limit to how much they play with your money
@chrisoliver @pluralistic
@chrisoliver @pluralistic I mean, it's like they want people to go Luffy (do it)

@chrisoliver @pluralistic Unfortunately, Sony have form for doing this. https://www.pcmag.com/news/playstation-owners-have-until-the-end-of-the-month-to-watch-their-purchased

This was in 2023, but with Discovery content.

Buy the blu-ray, people.

@gavin57 @chrisoliver @pluralistic Some blu-ray also have those DRM crap in them.

So buy the blueray and hack a digital copy to be sure they don't stole from you.

@chrisoliver @pluralistic It should be illegal for companies to call it buying when it's clearly just a "rent-until-we-stop-caring"
@chefx @chrisoliver @pluralistic I love that saying that if buying isn’t owning, then pirating isn’t stealing.

@chefx @chrisoliver @pluralistic We could use some kind of system where ownership of a movie sold (to own) is registered, and if one company turns evil or goes bust, other members of the scheme make sure it is still available to the buyer.

But it would be *huge*, and probably prone to errors.

@RupertReynolds @chefx @pluralistic we need laws that allow consumers to transfer all their DRM-laden digital media from one platform to another and makes digital purchases irrevocable.
@RupertReynolds @chrisoliver @pluralistic The simplest solution is having items physically, and for digital goods without copy-protection or at least copy protection that does not need an online service.
For example some Blu-Ray players have expiring licenses and at some point will stop playing Blu-Rays until you update the license. This is not acceptable.
Regular DVDs are offline only, which is why I am buying them. Only downside is terrible resolution 💀

@chefx @chrisoliver @pluralistic I grew up with 405 lines, then 625 lines PAL. A well-made DVD is fine for me and I buy the ones I really want to keep, and rip them for a backup in case the disc dies. Same for a lot of music.

But I think the streams need the same clear concepts of rental and ownership--progress is when things get better for people, not when they get worse.

@chefx @chrisoliver @pluralistic

They will have it all buried in the EULA that you have to sign/click.

It would be nice if someone had the time and money to take them to court to challenge the EULA. Just because something is written in a contract doesn't make it legal/fair or binding.

California's AB 2426: Game changer for video game and digital media purchases?

Effective 1st January 2025, a new law in California (AB 2426) will change how digital games and other digital goods, including movies, music and e-books...

Passle

@svavar @chefx @chrisoliver @pluralistic

I am not sure that this is really going to solve the problem. Just being slightly more transparent about an industry practise that should really shouldn't exist is a bit meh.

Full disclosure.
I don't buy digital movies, tv etc.
Or subscribe to pay streamers.
I use legit free with ads streamers (luckily the UK has a lot of broadcasters with this type of service) and buy physical media if possible for the content I want.

@chefx @chrisoliver @pluralistic

This is turbo annoying when it comes to physical devices that need an app to be useful.

Lots of devices are being bricked because the vendor can’t be arsed to keep the servers running or provide an offline mode.

@svavar @chrisoliver @pluralistic Yess! So annoying! Few years ago older people here in Germany always made jokes like "I'm sure there's an app for that now" whenever there was a problem, and now this has become sad reality...

@chefx @chrisoliver @pluralistic won't be made illegal we've seen in stop killing gamt that the bribe of all governement is deep.

So if buying is not owning ... Downloading is not stealing.

@chrisoliver @pluralistic That 'play has no limits' tag is just a wee bit ironic, eh?
@chrisoliver @pluralistic The worst DRM experience that I've had was with ITunes. I was an early adopter and had purchased tons of music with DRM. When Apple finally switched, I was told that it would cost me $500 to convert my library. Haven't purchased DRM'd since, and I've kept anything important to me in text files. It's not just that proprietary formats are wrong from a political perspective -- you're also very likely to outlive them.

@chrisoliver @pluralistic

Physical media is the only way to go.

Or sailing the seven seas.

@csstrowbridge @pluralistic sadly, but consumers should be giving the right to have their digital purchases be irrevocable and to freely move digital media between platforms.
@chrisoliver @pluralistic Did they seriously put "PLAY HAS NO LIMITS" right under the announcement that you can no longer play your purchased movies due to the limits of a licensing arrangement?

@chrisoliver @pluralistic

Just watch movies for free...
There are dozens of free movie sites online, both legal, and a little bit legal.

Use a VPN and your good to go.

@chrisoliver @pluralistic

And they wonder why piracy by average people is rampant in the world.....

Y'arrrr!

@chrisoliver @pluralistic

I once, just once, looked into Spotify's collection, specifically my favourite artist. Turned out they had a couple of albums from their oeuvre, some of the popular ones from just one of their labels. That settled it for me. #kthxbye :smily:

@chrisoliver @pluralistic How did this go last time they did this?

"Profit has no limits"

@RealGene @pluralistic cutting costs has no limits. They’re just trying to keep their business “sustainable” /s
@chrisoliver @pluralistic When it comes to games I like Itch.io because it is DRM free as well as gives more freedom to Devs and Players on how much they want to spend or how much they want to give to Itch.io
@chrisoliver @pluralistic sadly a lot of BlueRay players have remote wipe functionality, they can be rendered useless by the authorization server after you bought it. A bunch of BluRays require online DRM as well.

@chrisoliver @pluralistic

Hey, easy fix: Give The Money BACK!

@oscarfalcon Right? It'd be so clear-cut and simple solution. "You bought a product and we sadly can't provide it any more due to our whatever, so sorry, here's the money you spent back in our store credits, come watch something else", and they wouldn't even need to spend any Actual Moneys on this.

@chrisoliver @pluralistic

PLAY HAS NO LIMITS

@chrisoliver they should change their ad phrase 'PLAY HAS NO LIMITS' cause it seems ridiculous
@pluralistic

@chrisoliver thank you for sharing yet another example of the

"DRM rug pull"

dark pattern.

@chrisoliver @pluralistic

They pulled this crap last year or 2024 too.

When buying isn’t owning…

@chrisoliver @pluralistic

The audacity to use the "Play has no limits" footer on the notification that the duration of your "purchase" is limited to 2026-09-01.

@chrisoliver @pluralistic "PLAY HAS NO LIMITS" right under a retroactive limitation on playing your purchased movies...
