My parents just sent me an article about a craftsperson in my very small town and asked if I knew them. There is no such person. The entire thing, cartoonish images and blathering text, was AI generated. And clicking through on the convenient buy-now link I discover this machine-crafted person exists in a whole universe of imaginary friends hawking shitty tchotchkes. Grateful they were being scammed for tote bags and bee houses and not their life savings. How will we protect the elders?!?

@cthon1c

Your parents seem to be doing quite well: asking around before buying.

@cthon1c Oof, that's crazy…
@cthon1c @elduvelle unfortunately AI generated “craftspeople” selling items claimed to be homemade but actually brought in bulk from Temu are becoming a huge problem online. Often the promo for them comes with a claim that they’re a struggling small business or even more despicably that they’re from a marginalised group
@joannaholman "Hello I Am A Struggling Small Business From Marginalized Group!" should not be the dead giveaway it usually is, especially since the accompanying portrait of Marginalized Group is traditionally a stock photo of someone from literally any other group. @cthon1c @elduvelle
@cthon1c Age gate eveything. You'e not allowed online except for the third weekend after your 20th birthday.
@cthon1c tchotchkes is the best word
@cthon1c we won't :( like, we should still try and maybe it'll help sometime, but it's too big a change to protect people from if they don't take an active role in that themselves :(

@cthon1c Did they include product testimonials from Reviewers Alpha through Eta?

@cthon1c It might help to get them on to a browser with an ad blocker at least. (I went full Linux for my Mom. :-)
