#openstreetmap #osmand

@matusguy

https://cartes.app/ does that too 😉

@Bristow_69 damn! i was looking for a free alternarive to google maps satellite view and it seems this wouldve been it... almost!! Still a great website, thanks. Do you know any osm web app with free satellite imagery view, though?

@matusguy

This one is practically free. It was free until a week ago.

The developer has launched a very low-cost subscription (€3 for 3 months), and access to satellite imagery is available (he did this because it was costing him a lot).

You can subscribe using a simple OpenStreetMap account

@matusguy

and you can translate it into Portuguese before promoting it

@Bristow_69 well i was asking because i am sixteen years old and im not allowed to do purely online purchases at all. and also because it would make it easier to show to friends but thats another thing
@matusguy in many regions it actually can do this. Just to let you know.
(I love osm obv, but yeah. Just wanted to mention it)
@thibaultmol ah i actually didnt know that. Just got excited about the osmand update, really. I wouldnt really use this TBH.
@thibaultmol @matusguy I wonder how much of these data come from OSM 😅
@poxviridae @matusguy officially, they're not supposed to use OSM data without disclosing that they're using OSM data, and honestly, I highly doubt that they are using OSM data because they've had stuff like this for half a decade or maybe an entire decade because they're just extracting this information from all the various data sources that they have, which explains why some buildings are not as accurate when it comes to height.
@thibaultmol @matusguy Yeah I guess they have other data sources, but in my city it's quite obvious they copied data from somewhere without checking it (cf. https://piaille.fr/@poxviridae/116784671294680290) so I guessed it came from OSM. ^^
@poxviridae @matusguy don't forget that governments also have open data sets when it comes to building height, so it's possible that they just took it from there. Honestly, I highly doubt that they bothered to take it from OSM.
I'm not trying to defend Google here but like there's very often situations where OSM data is better than OpenStreetMap and they don't copy it.
