❓️ How attractive is a leisure destination?

Leisure trips are:
👉️ diverse
👉️ less routine than commuting
👉️ Increasingly important in the future: 15% more leisure trips are expected by 2050 (https://www.are.admin.ch/transport-outlook)

Stefano Benzoni (University of Zurich) did his master’s thesis with us.

Data he's used:
🍽️ Number of restaurants
🏖️ Lake shore length
⛰️ Landscape diversity index
⛷️ Hiking/skiing trails length
🚾 Support amenities
🏙️ Density and diversity of POIs
🖼️ Count of cultural POIs
etc.

He weighted and validated these indicators using observed leisure routes from the Mobility and Transport Microcensus #MTMC. He differentiated according to age (younger or older than 65) and duration (short/long).

The differences between short and longer leisure trips are particularly pronounced. Stefano was also able to integrate his data-rich approach into #SIMBA #MOBi, our agent-based transport model.

This master’s thesis helps us to better understand leisure mobility. It shows how rich data sources can describe the attractiveness of places.

We congratulate Stefano on his excellent master thesis 🎉

A great example of how the combination of higher education, research and practical traffic modelling creates real added value.
