Torge Rosendahl@signalapp why is there a limit of pinned chats in the first place? So many apps do that. why not let the user decide how many pins are too many? The reasonable number of pinned chats from a UX perspective depends heavily on screen size, scale / zoom, font size and other things.

If we ignore "they added the limit just for UX reasons" and try answering it as being a technical limitation, it just does not make sense:
It doesn't matter the data is encrypted, because encrypted data is barely larger than non-encrypted data. It does matter how pins are stored, but, even so, isn't like it takes a lot of space: just an integer to keep track of the order, it isn't that much. So arguing it may to avoid users wasting storage in their clients or wasting server bandwidth is non-sense.
Thus, the only argument that remains is exactly what you said, just a design decision. In the best case: just because UX. In the worst: they can make increasing this number a paid feature like WhatsApp. 😐

I wanted to say that since the sender of a message is not known on the server, the server cannot handle messages from pinned contacts differently. And Signal is not supposed to know who you contact, so nothing will be stored on their servers.

@chefx @qgustavor @signalapp probably it is int[] pinnedUsers = new int[4] somewhere and now they changed it to 10 because refactoring it was not requested by mgmt. Next upgrade 255 pinned chats mark my words.

@thelaminator take a look at Delta Chat, it has no limits for group description nor for pin messages, it also has in-chat mini-apps that are very useful for collaborative stuff and coordination, like notepads, to-do lists, shared calendar, etc.
and the best part: it has good multi-device and multi-profile support, every device is a main device so you don't depend on a main device/phone, it also doesn't require phone numbers or any data for registration!
@adbenitez @thelaminator I don't think Delta Chat is an option for many people, as it has even less users than Signal. I understand why you would want decentralised messaging, I like the concept and all. But Signal is non-profit and has pretty good privacy. And it looks and works like the big competing apps like WhatsApp, Telegram or Apple Messenger. I think it's easier to get people to use Signal than to use DeltaChat.

@chefx @thelaminator switching to Delta Chat is actually easier no entering of phone number, no captcha solving, no SMS code, no PIN ask etc, and has some advantages over signal, how many people use the app doesn't matter much, since what you need is the people around you to use the app, and it is not like everyone uses signal either way so if you need to convince them to install a new app, better do it with Delta Chat instead of Signal

I know tech savvy people are easy to get to use a new app, but I also have friends and family who are "normal" people, and they would never use DeltaChat. That is why I use Signal. And I don't see a point in splitting up messenger users even more, Signal is good enough.

my friend, that was the same about Signal at the beginning if we apply your same mentality then no one would have used Signal either, the fact you are recommending Signal today proves your own point is wrong
and yes, no one will install and use Delta Chat if you and everyone else don't stop misleading people into installing Signal (yet another centralized silo US company running on Amazon and other big tech and pouring millions per year to big tech) and start promoting Delta Chat or other decentralized alternative

But if I go to all my friends now and suggest they install another messenger after I convinced them to Signal, they will tell me to stfu. Which I can understand. After some time has passed I might ask them to join DeltaChat. I'll download DeltaChat now btw, and try it out.

thanks, but there are people out there already using the app, that is not how things work, you don't have to wait for the whole world to use an app to use it yourself, nor you need everyone to use an app to use it,
are you chatting to the whole world??? in practice what people need is a VERY FEW close circle to use the app, ex. some family and friends, and you just need to let them know that is the way they can reach you and help them setup the app
you just don't want to use it, which is ok, if you already have some other solution
but don't try to convince now everyone that using some centralized service is the only solution, because it is not :)
