We just increased the maximum number of pinned chats from 4 to 10, so you can show 6 more people how much you love what they have to say.
@signalapp Really cool! Could you maybe also increase the maximum length of the group-description.
Some of my WhatsApp groups have very large descriptions and its a hard triage when migrating.

@thelaminator take a look at Delta Chat, it has no limits for group description nor for pin messages, it also has in-chat mini-apps that are very useful for collaborative stuff and coordination, like notepads, to-do lists, shared calendar, etc.

and the best part: it has good multi-device and multi-profile support, every device is a main device so you don't depend on a main device/phone, it also doesn't require phone numbers or any data for registration!

@adbenitez @thelaminator I don't think Delta Chat is an option for many people, as it has even less users than Signal. I understand why you would want decentralised messaging, I like the concept and all. But Signal is non-profit and has pretty good privacy. And it looks and works like the big competing apps like WhatsApp, Telegram or Apple Messenger. I think it's easier to get people to use Signal than to use DeltaChat.
And you need to get people to use the messenger you use, because you cannot talk otherwise.

@chefx @thelaminator switching to Delta Chat is actually easier no entering of phone number, no captcha solving, no SMS code, no PIN ask etc, and has some advantages over signal, how many people use the app doesn't matter much, since what you need is the people around you to use the app, and it is not like everyone uses signal either way so if you need to convince them to install a new app, better do it with Delta Chat instead of Signal

@[email protected] Delta Chat has channels (1-to-many like on Telegram), Signal doesn't Signal is centralized and hence much more easy to block, while Delta Chat can even work in intra-net and mesh networks Delta Chat can use several servers "relays" at the same time, do you remember that downtime with signal when #amazon or #cloudflare are down?? with Delta Chat if one of your relays go down you can keep chatting using the others (ex. people manage to use Delta Chat in Iran, Russia and China despite the strict network firewalls, if you go on vacations to China Signal will not work, Delta Chat will) Signal doesn't support using the same account in multiple phones, and multi-device with desktop is weak and still depends on the phone, with delta chat you can have several devices at the same time and it is super easy to add a second device each device in Delta Chat works as an incremental automatic full backup, while in signal you have to upload backups to some cloud and eventually pay for it when the backup is too big in Delta Chat you can have several profiles, as much as you like, easily separate your work profile (with more serious avatar and name) from your family profile where you can use more informal name and avatar etc you don't need phone numbers or any private data to use Delta Chat, onboarding is super easy, no SMS codes, no solving CAPTCHA like on Signal No strangers can discover you and send you spam or fishing in Delta Chat same for your family members, so it is a safer space for family chat #DeltaChat has offline-first in-chat mini-apps like games, collaborative text pads, checklist, shopping lists and other tools (all end-to-end encrypted without any 3rd party service hosting such apps, they live in the chat and only chat members can access them) in Delta Chat you can save messages in a "Saved Messages" chat, #signal also has "Note to Self" but what is superior in Delta Chat is that you can also jump from the saved/bookmarked message to the original message and see it in its chat context, in Signal it just forwards a copy of the message to the "Note to Self" chat and more, but this post is too long already

@adbenitez @thelaminator I understand the point you're making, but DeltaChat is not an app people know about. People are much more probable to install an app they have heard about. And most people have at least heard about Signal.
I know tech savvy people are easy to get to use a new app, but I also have friends and family who are "normal" people, and they would never use DeltaChat. That is why I use Signal. And I don't see a point in splitting up messenger users even more, Signal is good enough.

@chefx @thelaminator

my friend, that was the same about Signal at the beginning if we apply your same mentality then no one would have used Signal either, the fact you are recommending Signal today proves your own point is wrong

and yes, no one will install and use Delta Chat if you and everyone else don't stop misleading people into installing Signal (yet another centralized silo US company running on Amazon and other big tech and pouring millions per year to big tech) and start promoting Delta Chat or other decentralized alternative

@adbenitez @thelaminator I like Signal. I get you don't like it, and I understand the reasons. But if I go to all my friends now and suggest they install another messenger after I convinced them to Signal, they will tell me to stfu. Which I can understand. After some time has passed I might ask them to join DeltaChat. I'll download DeltaChat now btw, and try it out.
@adbenitez @thelaminator And I just saw you're one of the devs so let me just tell you this: I really admire the work you're doing, and if I wouldn't have to convince people to try/use it I would also be on DeltaChat and probably use ArcaneChat.
It's just so hard to get people to use an app they have never heard of.

@chefx

thanks, but there are people out there already using the app, that is not how things work, you don't have to wait for the whole world to use an app to use it yourself, nor you need everyone to use an app to use it,

are you chatting to the whole world??? in practice what people need is a VERY FEW close circle to use the app, ex. some family and friends, and you just need to let them know that is the way they can reach you and help them setup the app

you just don't want to use it, which is ok, if you already have some other solution

but don't try to convince now everyone that using some centralized service is the only solution, because it is not :)

@adbenitez I'm not telling anyone it's the only solution, I'm just telling them it's better than WhatsApp, which is what people in my country use.
And since it looks and feels the same while being more secure and non-Facebook, it works out for most people.
But as I said, I'll try DeltaChat and maybe ask some of my computer-science peers to try it out as well.
