I don't care how bad your imposter syndrome is - you deserve every dollar you can get from capitalists. Negotiate as much money as you can. Demand raises. If you can find some other corp offering more, go there. It doesn't matter if you think you deserve it, it's about extracting wealth from corps. Even if it turns out you're keeping a seat warm for 6 figures. Keep that seat warm and cash those paychecks. (Then donate as much as you can afford to).

@JessTheUnstill When I was growing out of helpdesk, I got a new position as network admin, but HR capped my pay raise at 4% because "promotion."

When I left, I got a 120% pay increase. The only way to get more money is to go somewhere else.

@kajer Yup, I've never gotten over a 4% raise, but I nearly doubled my salary in 3 years via 2 job hops.

@JessTheUnstill THIS is the way!

(but not in today's job market :cry: )

@kajer yeah I have likely hit the peak for my job title. I don't see many places paying more for senior security engineers. So I'd have to shoot for Staff or principal engineer if I wanted more. But tbh that's more responsibility than I want, so I'll probably just stick with senior for until the layoffs or the burnout takes me.
@JessTheUnstill @kajer the higher your position the more you are abstracted away from the "doing" kind of work. It's not necessarily harder, just different. Personally I love the "doing" part much more than creating presentations and going to endless meetings but the pay is hard to argue with
@nechesh @kajer Yeah, I've reached the point where quality of life and mental sustainability are more important than money. I still fight for bonuses and raises, but more meetings would kill me.
@JessTheUnstill @nechesh @kajer this! Mental health matters. I’m thinking of quitting but the first post imploring us to maximize how much we extract gave me a flash of guilt, and left second guessing whether I should just keep the peek-career job just to milk it like a soulless mercenary. No thanks! Good message about not feeling guilty looking for higher pay though. It just hits wrong for those of us who want to opt out entirely.
@whykats @nechesh @kajer It's hard to put all the nuance into a single bombastic post 🤷‍♀️
@JessTheUnstill yup! Retired from tech and am proudly donating to good causes. Although I never thought I wasn't good enough, quite the contrary :-) But your advice is genius nonetheless!
What's the minimum size of a company in order for the owner to be a capitalist? Say your neighbour has a family business doing ... well, anything, and has your other neighbour as employee. Does that qualify? If not, when? Please advise.
@mikaelj.se You'll have to make those judgement calls for yourself. Obviously there's not some one sized fits all answer. Just remember that your landlord or bank doesn't accept goodwill in lieu of cash. You may value intangible or illiquid benefits to be worth more than additional cash - job stability, ownership stakes, work life balance, whatever. But still keep in mind what you're giving up by working for less than you could get from some corp.
How do you propose money should be earned, then?
@mikaelj.se Work for a company that pays you well.
@JessTheUnstill
Best advice I've read so far today.

@JessTheUnstill

This is the fucking _way_. <3
