The bill’s passage, by a lopsided 358-to-32 vote, ended months of sparring between the #House & #Senate over a sprawling measure that aims to tackle the housing crisis by boosting supply in a country facing an acute shortage of new homes. The Senate passed its version of the same bill Monday, by a vote of 85 to 5.

“Today’s Housing News Conference & Signing is hereby cancelled until such time as we pass the desperately needed SAVE AMERICA ACT, which I consider to be a National Emergency,” Trump wrote.

President Donald Trump has berated Senate Republicans during his visit to the Capitol for allowing a vote to block his war in Iran, further escalating a feud that has diverted GOP efforts to focus on election-year affordability issues and brought much of the chamber’s business to a halt. Trump had signaled ahead of time that he would use the closed-door meeting to push senators to pass his proof-of-citizenship voting bill. But the conversation was more focused on Tuesday’s vote to approve the war powers resolution, a mostly symbolic measure that allows Congress to rebuke the administration’s military actions.

#Trump has been pushing the #Senate to remove the #filibuster in order to pass the “SAVE America Act” because he doesn’t even have enough Republican votes for it to pass. It would introduce new voter #identification requirements.

The measure as written constitutes #VoterSuppression.

Fun work around of an incompetent president, even though #Trump has said he would not sign the #housing bill, it can still become #law WITHOUT his signature. If #Congress is in session, #legislation can generally become law 10 days after a bill is enrolled & presented to the president.

#AffordableHousing leaders were apoplectic at the news that the #housing bill signing would not go ahead on Wednesday. Some had received invitations to the bill signing late last night and were en route to the Capitol when they learned that #Trump had canceled the event.

The package of national voting restrictions called the “SAVE America Act” would require a photo ID to vote in federal #elections & proof of #US #citizenship to register, while compelling #states to turn over their voter registration rolls to the #federal government.

That’s for Trump’s executive order. He’s coming at this from multiple angles. He has FBI, DNI, DHS all performing “investigations”. But if he gets Congress — the legislative branch — to pass a bill that he then signs into law, well then, that’s the law. Of course the law can be challenged in court but it won’t immediately stop it from being enacted. The justice system moves at a snail’s pace.
