After months of #RCS inexplicably working on #GrapheneOS it just broke again with an unwanted Google Messages app update, so far can't fix it. Between this and the imminent #apple-like app store lockdown, I've never been more disappointed with #Android and #Google
Maybe it's time to cut ties entirely with RCS and push friends to Signal or non-phone chat solutions ONLY.
It's obscene to say this: In some ways WhatsApp is less evil and certainly less broken.
#Android #Google #GrapheneOS #RCS
@dino It's fixed in the next release.
@springonion Next release of Google Messages? GrapheneOS? Can you share a version number of something?
Asking because I've already tried some forced-downgrading with APK files for Messages to no avail yet.
RCS stopped working on both Android 16 QPR2 and Android 17 releases for a subset of users · Issue #8080 · GrapheneOS/os-issue-tracker

My RCS Status shows "Connected" but I can't send or receive any RCS messages on build 2026061601 with ATT

@[email protected] Signal really does feel like the most-accessible option that normal folk can easily adopt into their lives too. I know there are technically better solutions from a security point of view, but I think Signal strikes the sanest balance between security and usability.

In an ideal world something like Jabber would have been the best choice, but it has quite a few gotchas (as with any decentralized solution, I suppose) that make it a harder sell. Signal just works, (video) calls and all.

I'm fortunate enough that I was able to convince my family members to install it "for me" with relatively minimal pushback. I kind of had to "nudge" several a bit extra, saying that to only other alternative would be email then, as I was closing down my WhatsApp account with certainty — my family is from & in Europe, where WhatsApp is the defacto standard, much to my chagrin.

If you can and are willing to potentially push through some of that friction, it'll be well worth it in the end I'm sure! If for anything else, it'll ensure feature parity for anyone you communicate with, whether they're on Android or iOS.

I hope you'll be able to make it work!
