CA lawmakers are fast-tracking A.B. 1709, a sweeping bill that would ban anyone under 16 from using social media and force every user to submit sensitive personal information before accessing social platforms. Stop California’s Social Media Ban (A.B. 1709)

@eff yes, once again treating people like little robots that can be programmed with laws. You have to reign in the supplier not the consumer.

@eff

This is So Weird. First they want to surveil
my 3D printer, now they want to somehow decide what sites I can visit.

None of this is remotely practical.

@eff I've contacted my state senator again. Pissed off that my assemblymember voted for the damn thing.
@kelson @eff The text of AB 1709, near the start, says, "social media platforms are intentionally designed to maximize user engagement through features such as algorithmic content recommendation ...." Assembly members are not programmers and are probably falling for Facebook marketing about Facebook's "algorithm", not realizing that FIFO (first in, first out) is technically an algorithm, as is long division as taught in elementary school.

@eff this will never happen, at least not in my family, even if the fascists do push it through.

As a tech literate parent, my partner and I are 100% responsible for our childrens' online security - not some fascist oligarchy that is stealing personal info - and we know how to actively work around all this tech and control our children's access ourselves, *one way or the other*.

Much of the modern internet is shit, anyway. Fuck this mutation. GENERAL ACTION NOW!

Age verification mandates don't protect kids. They build national ID infrastructure for every platform, paid for in everyone's privacy.
