Old, tired tech worker, COVID safe, musician, parent, and seeker of better mastodon instances. A proletariat living in the latest stages of the worst economic system we've seen on this planet. Fun times! #generalaction is my only remaining vote, and we live in a general strike condition.
"Modders on platforms like Facebook Marketplace are offering a service to physically disable the front recording LED on the Ray-Ban Meta #smartglasses, effectively creating a “stealth mode” that completely bypasses Meta’s built-in privacy guardrails" https://www.androidauthority.com/ray-ban-meta-stealth-mode-mod-3674350/
Modders are turning Ray-Ban Meta glasses into spy gear for as little as $50

Modders are charging $50-$100 to physically destroy the LED on Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses and bypass privacy guardrails for recording video.

“A German regional court has ruled that Google is directly liable for false claims in its AI-generated search overviews.

“The court treated the AI overviews as Google's own content and rejected Google's argument that users were responsible for fact-checking the results themselves.”

Landmark German ruling declares Google's AI Overviews are Google's own words and makes it liable for false answers

A German regional court has ruled that Google is directly liable for the content of its AI search overviews. According to the court, previous limited liability protections for search engine operators don't apply to AI overviews. In this case, Google's AI had falsely linked two publishers to fraud and made claims that didn't appear in any of the linked sources. The ruling could set a precedent for AI-generated content liability worldwide.

“Automated Mansplaining” is absolutely among the best descriptions of AI I’ve heard. And yes, if you come at me with LLM text, I cannot be bothered to read what you cannot be bothered to write.

"Israel is explicitly warning Christian residents in southern Lebanon not to welcome Muslim residents among them, threatening to bomb Christian neighborhoods.

Israel is now searching for Muslims hiding in the attics of Christians. It’s not 1944. Read that again.

The goal isn't military. It's destabilizing social stability in Lebanon."

How many fucking times must I block "the kyiv independent" lmao sooner or later this "good war" that so many of you seem oblivious about or too young to understand will become "oops, oh shit its another US-backed proxy war involving 3rd parties fighting each other to provide the US an opportunity! Wow I never saw that coming!"

This is coming. You will feel like a fucking tool when its post mortem, like anyone who has supported ANY war, intervention, or US conflict in 70+ years.

Old PC world:
You worked to make the machine run smoothly, you learned about prerequisites and kept notes on complicated configs, and if you messed up or didnt know how to configure something, it usually stopped working.

New PC world:
You work to stop the computer from doing many bad, non private, non human-desirable things, and if you mess up or dont know what you are doing, the computer keeps working and does worse and worse things to you and your family, including rebuilding itself.

Energy, water use and pollution of AI and data centers rival most countries

If data centers were a country, the country would be projected to rank sixth-highest in power use in 2030.

You "backrooms are scary" (empty office spaces are scary, liminal space) people:

Ostensibly you are saying a less scary office is one filled with people and corporate accoutrements? You find EMPTY SPACES so terrifying they've made low-effort entertainment $$$ out of it for a decade now, and this leads to the inevitable question: you ARENT afraid of corporate office spaces with people in them?

Huh.
