Morten MosgaardManually importing samples into the #Bitwig sampler, to create your own searchable presets, takes A LOT of time. The sampler is doing a great job organizing the samples automatically, but you have to split up layers yourself and make groups to structure and organize these layers (like L/R or velocity). I used the SFZ files from #SamplesFromMars a bit, but it’s better/easier to just drag and drop the samples and be in control of how they are imported.
It’s easy to see already, that this will be a huge quality of life improvement when in production. The time you spend sharpening your tools are not wasted.
Searching for keywords and tags is SOO fast in #Bitwig, and when you import everything manually, you get to both know what’s in your sample collection and make sure to choose keywords and tags that actually fits with the sample collection.
Browsing samples will be such a joy.

My main purpose of doing this, is because I often prefer using samples (synth, instruments and drums) over software instruments.
There is nothing wrong with software instruments, but the original synth re-sampled through a 12-bit hardware sampler, is a sound I can’t really mimic in the box, and I like that sound. I grew up listening to a lot of hip hop, so it all feels very natural.

With my new presets in #Bitwig my workflow for opening a bunch of kicks collected in a preset would be:
press B (open pop-up browser), search for “sa” (for sampler), press enter twice, press B (open pop-up browser in presets), search “sfm” (for Samples From Mars) and BD (for base drum). Tap a midi controller for checking the samples, press down for a new preset etc…
I have never had a faster workflow for browsing sounds.

For now I have decided to make presets for all synths AND for all the collection of drum sounds seperated in categories. No kits. The #SamplesFromMars drum samples are often devided into folders per drum type and recording method, so you have 15-20 clean kick samples from the 808, 15-20 modded and 10-20 re-sampled version fx. I organize with one type of sound and one recording approach per preset. Easy to navigate with search and scroll.
This obviously gives a huge amount of presets in #Bitwig, which really wasn’t my intention, but now when I’m working my way through my library, it’s just so clear how great it will be relying on search and browse in the pop up browser, which ultimately will lead to me using my big sample collection more often - and therefore make me less depended on learning/buying new software instruments.
And the last thing: wav-files support Linux natively 😂
