#ScribesAndMakers June 20. How difficult is it for you to receive criticism of your creative work?

Some may have read some of my recent posts about a bit of a struggle with some very poorly-delivered critique. One might think “extremely” coming out of that.

But I have done collaborative creative projects for over two decades. Critique is part and parcel, and I thrive with proper feedback. I’m a sensitive soul, but I have set up tools for myself to absorb and process feedback.

#ScribesAndMakers 20. Critique continued

My tools are basic. Typically I try to meet up with someone giving a critique, so that I can ask questions and get to the root of what they actually mean. Sometimes comments can lack clarity or context that an in-person discussion helps to clear up before I start spiralling over nonsense. 😜

I also need time and space to get in the right mental place to emotionally disconnect from my work. Then I can hear out critique without defensiveness or hurt.

#ScribesAndMakers more Critique

Critique itself is a skill. Not everyone knows to apply this skill, even folks who critique all the time.

People see the words radical candour and think that harshness counts, I guess? It doesn’t.

For me, candid feedback is great if it’s contextual and constructive. No need for rose coloured glasses, but maybe the occasional shit sandwich? 😆

So that’s my ramble on critique. Is that difficult? I dunno. What do you think? 3/3
