Improvising microtonally can be a challenge. Interesting things begin to happen when pitches with higher-integer relationships are interacting, but this opens a risk of very dissonant intervals, or (when the intervals are very close to 12-tone equal temperament) just sounding out of tune. The pitches a little farther away from 12TET intervals, for which we don't yet have an emotional vocabulary for interpretation, give us an opportunity to create our own responses.
This performance is largely consonant, with some sections flowing from that in-between realm. To me, the music is manifesting with an attitude of calm, supported by an inner resilience. The timbres resemble reed instruments and the flute family, with many of the note durations equivalent to a long breath. (There's a lot of breath here for something made with strings.)
Spring is almost behind us. Summer awaits.
The titles of these pieces are references to the visual art of Lynda Smith-Bügge. Thank you for listening!
