One of the main skills of a landscape photographer is being there at the right time.

That usually means checking multiple weather apps, trying not to miss fog, rain clearing, clouds, tides, moonrise, etc. It is tiring, and it is easy to forget or miss the window.

That's why I built PhotoSignal - a web app for photography weather alerts.

Basic account is free.

I’ve just launched it, so I’d appreciate any feedback.

@antongorlin Such a good idea for a service. One thing I started wondering was the weather data coverage. Is it primarily designed for Australia, or do you have good weather data sources for many countries around the world?
@autiomaa i use open meteo, and it picks best weather models based on locations. In the future, I'm planning to add multi-model confidence thing because the models sometimes disagree.

@antongorlin List of what data sources Finnish weather data company uses in their services across the world: https://www.foreca.com/data-sources

"In total, Foreca gathers and fuses 50+ different data sources world-wide."

Data Sources

@antongorlin They also have an API, so that is one option for future if there are issues with Open Meteo.
https://corporate.foreca.com/en/foreca-weather-api

"Global coverage - weather forecasts for every coordinate in the world."

Foreca Weather API

Foreca Weather API includes accurate weather forecasts and observations. API provides global high-quality weather data, including point forecasts and maps.

@autiomaa thanks, I just had a look. They don't have the separation of high/mid/low clouds, which is important and are pricier. But I'll surely keep them in mind.
@antongorlin this is gorgeous -- thanks for sharing it!

@antongorlin
Does it feature:
- plant bloom,
- vegetation status,
- weather radar,
- sun path,
- social events,
- OSINT?

(I'm joking, but as an ex-proamateur photographer only slightly.)

@dzwiedziu oof. I know nothing about vegetation status for example. Is it a thing for nature photographers?
I intentionally avoided radar because there are mature radar apps.
sun path, however, is calculated in the background for figuring out horizon gap, and general sky context.

@antongorlin

10 minutes later and no verification email?

@mycotropic this is odd, they should send immediately. No email in the end? Have you tried resend?
@mycotropic i just checked email logs, it shows delivered for your username. Have you checked spam folder? or could be some typo?
@antongorlin Great job with the service. Have installed without issues. Thank you
@johndecosta thanks John, hopefully you find it useful

@antongorlin excellent idea. I tried to set up home assistant alerts for fog based on BOM data, but this is much better.

Verification email took a few min, the link said expired when i used it immediately after, but i was logged in fine anyway. (Was on ios). First alert set up no problem.

Just one question - alerts are only real time i guess? No chance that, for example, a fog prediction would come up the night before so you could set an early alarm??

Good to see Kp in there. Add in Bt and Bz?

This idea has great promise.
